Emily Deschanel has a few bones to pick

American actress Emily Deschanel was in Tokyo recently to promote her TV drama "Bones." Her character, Temperance “Bones” Brennan, is a forensic anthropologist who teams up with FBI agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) to solve crimes. Deschanel has a keen interest in how the show will fare in Japan, especially since taking on the second role of co-producer in 2007 —a lthough she jokes that the job was only offered to her so the studio wouldn’t have to raise her salary.

Deschanel, who has appeared in such films as "Cold Mountain," "The Alamo" and "Spider-Man 2," is no stranger to life on the other side of the camera, however, having spent much of her childhood traveling the world with her cinematographer father, Caleb Deschanel. In a television market that’s flooded with police procedurals and crime dramas, Deschanel believes that focus on relationships and character development is what has helped "Bones" to stand out from the crowd. In fact, she says that the show could almost be considered a romantic comedy (that just happens to be set in the world of forensics).

In spite of the fact that "Bones" is nominally based on the series of books by Kathy Reichs, Deschanel’s character has little in common with the book’s protagonist. Their names and professions are the same, but the similarities end there. In order to keep her concept of the character from being influenced, Deschanel didn’t even read any of the books until after the pilot was filmed.

As the show progresses, Deschanel says that in addition to several increasingly gory cases, viewers will also get to see more of the evolving relationship between Brennan and Booth—including a kiss. Season 3 will begin airing on Fox Japan on Oct 3. (Sarah Cortina/Metropolis)
