TOKYO —

British singer Eric Clapton, 63, on Sunday performed at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo as part of his Japan tour. About 10,000 fans attended the two-hour concert in which Clapton performed 18 songs.

Clapton, last here two years ago, has so far held concerts at the Budokan 71 times since he first toured Japan in 1974, which marks a record among foreign artists.

Next Saturday and Sunday, Clapton will be joined by British guitar legend Jeff Beck at concerts at Saitama Super Arena, according to organizers.

Saw him at the Chicago Stadium in '79. Great show! Muddy Waters opened, Clapton jammed a bit with Muddy's band.. Clapton did two sets, including Albert Lee singing "Country Boy".. then Muddy, Johnny Winter, Pinetop Perkins and Willie Dixon all came out to jam. INCREDIBLE.

He looks pretty spritely for 63. Maybe it's because he's out to "cha-aa--aaa---nge the world."

I like Eric from the Cream/Derek/Blind Faith days. I wonder if he will play that era (or earlier with Beck). Could be worth going.

If he's playing with Jeff Beck, I hope his amps are fixed for that gig. Last week in Yokohama, he walked off stage, as the sound was so bad, and apologised to the audience. The techs took around 10 minutes to fix it, but the set was still only 90 minutes long. Not the best value...

British Singer eh? I suppose he does sing; but is that what he's known for, singing? He plays a little guitar too, I've heard.

This guy hasn't released a decent album in over a decade, so hopefully he will dump the babyface duets and start jamming again.

With Jeff Beck it should be a show.

I saw Clapton twice and thought him a dreadful bore. Now give me some Dead, and that keeps me happy.

m5c32, I thought that was odd too. I've been a Clapton fan for 25 years and I've never heard him been referred to as a "singer". Oh well, I guess he can carry a tune...

71 times; at least two gigs a year here for 35 years. He must keep a condo in Tokyo...
