Eric Clapton to make 18th visit to Japan next February

TOKYO —

Eric Clapton, 63, will be back in Japan for the first time in two and a half years, performing in Tokyo and Osaka next February. It will be his 18th visit to Japan. In celebration of the 35th anniversary of his first visit to Japan, event organizer Udo Artists Inc has designed various tickets for the upcoming concerts, and feature miniaturized versions of the posters used for Clapton concerts from his first visit to Japan to his 12th visit in 1999.

He will be performing at the Osaka Castle Hall on Feb 12 and 13, and at the Budokan in Tokyo on Feb 15, 18, 19, 24, 25 and 27. For those interested in purchasing tickets, the Tokyo number is 03–3402–5999. The Osaka number is 06–6341–4506.

I have already been to his last concert in Japan - twice!

I saw Eric Clapton live only once, on August 1, 1969, when he came to Detroit with his group at the time, Blind Faith. Opening acts were local group The Frost, and then came Rory Gallagher and his group, The Taste, and then Delaney, Bonnie and Friends. Finally, Blind Faith took the stage and rocked the town into the wee hours of the morning -- with Delaney, Bonnie and Friends joining them for a bunch of Cream songs. (I became a fan of Steve Winwood's band, Traffic, after he left Blind Faith and returned to that group.)

A ticket to that concert cost about $5.00.

I don't think Japan has ever experienced anything like that.

    No Sapporo show this time??

He was good when he played Sapporo Dome a few years ago. Not awesome, but then it's a big place to play and the acoustics are poor. Toward the end, he finally started warming up to the crowd, and then the organizers pulled the plug, like they always do at shows in Japan.

Was that the tour with Trucks/Bramhall, or the one before?

Trucks was brilliant at that show, but yeah, Clapton seemed a little distant for most of it. I got the feeling that Clapton cut the show a little short, as opposed to the organizers. Seemed like the acoustics of a half empty dome were getting to him.
