How to comment on a novel you know to be erotic, but have refrained from reading because you know your daughter has already read it. My mental state would be better if these kinds of things were less publicised. Can't we talk about the weather instead?

This is about the USA, not about Japan. In Japan mangas are more exciting than this utterly childish book, which was written by and for frustrated housewives in the mid-west.

You will find an identical comment to mine in EVERY literary section of serious media. And not just in Europe, even in the USA.

South East. England, that is.

LoL, perhaps this book would spark up some fire among the high average of sexless couples in this country. . . . Better yet, ignite a well needed "babyboom" for Japan.

Some prudish comments, and to each his/her own. The reality remains that humans, too, are highly sexed beings, and safe, loving sex is essential to our mental health.

I'd much rather see some kissing and suggested shagging on evening TV than the violence kids are exposed to daytime programmes.

Spiced up vanilla sex for the masses. Sounds incredibly boring. Sex is great, but books about it generally aren't. But if it helps out the sex toy manufacturers, then it's all good. The problem is, sex toys wielded by the wrong person tend to reduce everyone to giggles.

Wouldn't porn be cheaper? SMH at the ladies who have to turn sex into an "event".

I'm not sure if this movie will be popular in Japan. I mean, the woman in it doesn't dress up in a schoolgirl uniform or look like a teenager, so I'm not sure if it will be considered 'erotic' as such....

Trashy sex novels = childish. Manga = ?

@Wc626 ignite a well needed "babyboom" for Japan

Japan does not need more people. The country lives far beyond its ecological carrying capacity. Just a little more pleasure for everyone would be sufficient as there are just too many glum faces. If toys are the answer, more power to you!

Japan already has some of the wildest sex toy shops around. They sell everything that can bring about a climax ... in either a man or a woman. Tokyo & Osaka head the list of places that have such shops. Fun browsing around in them. Lots of strange gadgets to view ... and, I guess, buy.

Haven't read the book yet ... and probably don't have to. Just walking around one of those shops would save reading time ...

"I'm not sure if this movie will be popular in Japan."

I know of two bondage clubs in Tokyo (never been to them though) and there is a tradition of Japanese bondage called kinbaku so I'll bet there will be some interest by the Japanese public.

Buying new tools won't make your tools any sharper. Marketing and Merchandising for those who can't do enough for each other just being themselves. Sad.

Slateford credited the books and growing acceptance of sexual openness with causing “the adult sex toy industry to explode.” . . . all over the place. yuk yuk yuk.

How do they sell these things in Japan? After all, that woman who sent out data for 3D-printing her vulva was arrested for breaking the "obscenity" law. Therefore, if any shop were to display a vibrator the police should arrest the culprits at once. If the police don't arrest them, perhaps they can explain why not.

Yeah - NOT in Japan! 99.9% of women here would have no idea what 50 Shades Of Grey is...

I'm sorry but Japanese erotic manga will never be as good as the real thing. The difference is the passion behind what they are doing.

I believe Japanese men prefer to humiliate their women instead of indulging their spirit.

Women in Japan have been forgotten when it comes to pornography in this country. Whenever I search for adult video or toys aimed at what women want to experience I can't find it. Something is there but I sense automatically that it's to satisfy a Japanese man's wet dream or his lolita complex.

Lingerie shops are disappearing. Women have to shop on the net to find imported brands that offer high quality materials. If you are living in Tokyo you could find a few boutiques but what about the rest of the nation?

Japanese women are stepping up their game. I see the gel nails and the high quality pumps. They are moving away from buriko girly voices to strong sexually confident women. The problem with the industry is that Japanese men are still pushing their wet dreams.

The BDSM community is very unique though. I'd say it's a bit better than what you would see in 50 Shades but thanks to Ishihara a lot of those exclusive clubs have been closed down. There's only one place in Tokyo that offers the experience you might see in 50 Shades but you'll pay at least 30,000 just to enjoy that.

Here in aging Japan? Shouldn't that be "Fifty Gray Hairs?"

Apparently the book portrays violence and abuse rather than BDSM. I'd hate to think that some ladies get themselves injured by trying to replicate the activities detailed in the book. There's no love in there, just violent mechanical sex.

No, but they make a contract. The terms of the contract as to what is OK and what is not are explained to the girl and she chooses yes or no to each item. The process continues for pages, perhaps more than 100 pages. I got bored and stopped reading in just a few pages.

In Japan mangas are more exciting than this utterly childish book, you mean magna depicting underage girls being raped/having sex. if thats you idea of exciting then you may need some psychological help!

Read the reviews of the books, looks forgettable and rather uninteresting.

No plans to buy the books or see the movie. Far cry from the 'Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' trilogy.

Well, seeing that the Japanese apparently are off sex, this is probably a good thing. Abe should approve :-)

Apparently 50 Shades was based off a Twilight fan fiction story. If that isnt enough of a warning to avoid it at all costs I don't know what is.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Grey is not a color. So I am glad they got that right by using the word shades.

The novel started out as Twilight fan-fiction, which is why I have not, and will not, read it.

I can't believe the world is so full of so many Clueless people ! No Imagination or just plain vanilla in the sack!- they need a Handbook on role-play-Sheeezzzzzzzzz!

The poster said childish, because this novels are a fanfiction of twilight books with an erotic twist, a tale of how an "innocent" girl manages to make a Dominant rich guy into BDSM to fall in love with her.

Yeah, The author started to make a Fanfiction about "Twilight" which derived into this novel. It´s cheesy, so, to each its own, myself, I only have to read it once, it is completely rubbish and forgettable

Actually for manga followers, they will notice the plot of Fifty Shades of Grey (FSOG) is akin to most Shojou mangas...bondage is even the stuff of some hentai manga... I wouldn't be surprised if someone will turn FSOG into manga.
