An event is held Sunday to mark hide's 45th birthday.

TOKYO —

It was announced Sunday that Buddhist memorial services commemorating the 13th anniversary of the death of hide, the legendary X-Japan guitarist who died in 1998, will be held at Tsukiji Hongan-ji on May 2 of next year. This will be the first memorial service for the musician. Fellow X-Japan member Yoshiki will reportedly participate.

The service, which is rumored to be both the first and likely the last, is expected to attract a record 50,000 mourners.

On Sunday, which would have been hide’s 45th birthday, 1,500 people attended Kawasaki’s Club Citta’s annual birthday event, watching videos of hide’s performances and cheering as plans for the memorial service were announced on a giant screen.

A commemorative funeral event is held every year, with the third anniversary in 2000 being held at the then-under construction “hide Museum” (closed in 2005) in the musician’s hometown of Yokosuka. On the seventh anniversary, over 18,000 people offered flowers at the museum.

Is there a reason why this guy's name does not start with a capital H?

sarcasm123: I imagine it's the same reason that U2's The Edge is called The Edge. To be edgy.

    RIP, hide.

It's English for the Japanese, not English for English speakers. Looks cute, who cares for correct usage.

misono would be another example. Or SHIHO.

13th anniversary, but it seems like 12 years will pass. I guess it's that weird counting system again...
