Singer Hikaru Utada, 26, wrote on her blog Tuesday that she is suffering from a bout of tonsillitis and apologized for canceling in-store events scheduled for this week in the U.S.
Her blog update – titled “To my fans in America!” – said she has come down with a severe form of tonsillitis and that it happens to her once a twice a year when she is really tired. She said she had been mostly in bed for the past week, visiting a hospital daily to receive intravenous medication.
Utada that she was nearly better but that her doctors advised her she shouldn’t travel or work for a while, so she will rest as much as possible.

Most likely fans in California and Hawaii, maybe a bit in New York. I think her fans are more tied to Japanese Ex-Pats in the US. Idol singers generally don't register well with Cosplay Otaku (nerds), at least not in the way that they do in Japan.

.....or maybe she is really sick and just can't do the promotion. You people are such inconsiderate assclowns.

Bravo! Finally a voice of reason.

I go and write all that and forget to mention that, "another swine flu hysteria victim has decided to stay at home." I mean come on....tonsilitis? In store promotions could be done without a lot of talking...and any fans that happened to show up would think the more of her for being such a ganbariyasan.

Drug her up a bit and tell the "fans" that she has come despite her suffering from tonsillitis. She is seen as a hero, does promotional events with the minimum of talking and then gets to go back to her sickbed.

Dissing is fun, isn't it. Utada is extremely talented and possibly the smartest of all the j-pop female singers today. I am a fan with 20 years playing in, recording and managing rock bands...hardly the nerdy white boy stereotype. Why rip into her for having a cold, when most the people on this site would call in sick to work with lesser symtoms? I'm with Jericho8 on this one.

Are you serious? Really? Do you know that for a fact? I know quite a few people who enjoy Utada's music, for the MUSIC, and they don't dress up like anime characters during japanese cultural festivals and they aren't little nerdy white boys. And honestly, that's really insulting. Why don't you check you facts before you begin categorizing Utada's American Fans.

She has lots of Asian fans who live in the US - not just Japanese fans. Although most American Otaku probably know her for her contributions to the Kingdom Hearts franchise, I highly doubt most even know anything outside of that. About being a hero and carrying on despite her illness? Didn't she do that when she had an allergic reaction during her 2005 tour and continue singing even though her voice was bad and got highly crticised for that? She's better erring on the side of caution.

I live in the US and yes, my first exposure to Utada was from Kingdom Hearts. It made me want to find out more about her and that led to my learning about other Japanese artists as well. (Garnet Crow also being one of my faves.) I love her music and wish her a speedy recovery. Come to Texas Hikki!!!! We love you!!!!

It's not actually tonsillitis, it's peritonsillitis, which is more severe than tonsillitis. It's an inflammation of the tonsils and surrounding tissues, and it's incredibly painful and filled with pus, which means no singing, nor talking, for two weeks.

Thank god, one less talentless manufactured pop idiot in America.
Real music lovers have no time for this factory production line pap, especially from Asian countries where the satndards are particulary dire.
