Hollywood movie titles lost in translation

But I think keeping titles in their original wording helps other nations learn new words and expressions.

For example, I learned the word "Ran" from Kurosawa's movie meant revolt, rebellion, and war.

Many of my Japanese students have also picked up some English vocabulary through titles of movies.

“Boogie Nights,” the story of a young man becoming a porn star, was renamed “His Great Device Makes Him Famous.”

I'll have to admit I loved this one ! However, I think the first one : “American Hustle” could have been better translated (in French) as "Escroquerie à l'américaine".

Seeing "Alien" become the "8th Passenger" boggles my mind. I suppose though, that "Terminator" becoming "Deadly Mission" kind of makes sense, since Kyle Reece's mission was to save Sarah Connor from being killed by a Cyborg. Even so, there must be a direct translation for "Terminator". But, when all is said and done "His Great Device Makes Him Famous" is quite a priceless title. That's one way to refer to a guy's little colonel.

It happens. Laurie Lee's "Cider With Rosie" was named "Edge of Day" in the US.

these are funny... like how they translated "Despicable Me" as "My favorite Villain" in Latin America
