TOKYO —

British actress Emma Thompson has reprised the role of Nanny McPhee, the governess with magical powers created by venerated British children’s writer Christianna Brand. In “Nanny McPhee Returns,” a sequel to the 2005 film, Thompson plays a governess who shows up to help a harried farm woman (Maggie Gyllenhaal) raise her children. She imparts to the children five important lessons, including how to teach pigs to fly. Fellow Brits Maggie Smith and Ewan McGregor make cameo appearances.

Ahead of the film’s official release in Japan, a special screening for mothers of young children was held in Shiodome, with actor Junichi Ishida and education analyst Naoki Ogi in attendance, as well as piglet which, unlike those in the film, couldn’t fly. Ogi is an expert on the relatively recent phenomenon of “ikumen” (child-rearing dads).

On the other hand, Ishida, a former longtime bachelor who married pro golfer Riko Higashio last year, could only answer “Well…” when asked when he would finally become a parent. Both praised what the film has to offer. “As an education theorist, I mainly work in print, but the power of movies is really amazing,” Ogi remarked. “This film is not only about educating children,” Ishida remarked, “but gives us several important life lessons.”

To mark the release of the film, Ogi has released a series of YouTube videos with lessons for Japanese parents, including not pulling a child’s arm while saying ‘hurry up’” and avoiding saying dame (“don’t do that”) every minute.

Parenting ideas? How can this even rate on the scale of priorities with the radiation risks at hand. That should be the primary focus of EVERYONE. Not this ridiculous movie or its parenting ideas. Unbelievable.

i completely agree with the pulling on the childs arm telling them to hurry, I see it so much here kids legs are smaller than adults how can they keep with your pace? parenting ideas should be a top priority no matter what too many kids are neglected here and all over the world. my number 1 hate negligence here? leaving a child in a car alone!

Sounds like a modern version of Mary Poppins. Or todays stint in the govt, where they put women/mothers alongside handicapped-by a woman I might add, pathetic. And the modern version, I have a theory, that is ikumen are the result of broken families, and their children who have seen where the father could have been used at home more, and the mother sees nothing but the cash flow-thus ikumen(is that what theyre called huh-sick). And the 2 represented here is your typical eastern philosophy of balance. No practical experience either one of them, so they are a perfect balance alongside the experience of a pig flying nanny. Makes so little sense.....

ikumen are the result of broken families

Fully agreed. They definitely didn't learn what it means to be the male head of household.

    I repeat, What??

育メン/ikumen = dads who are actively involved in the raising of their children. I guarantee the vast majority of them, including the father of my children and my son-in-law, are not the result of broken families. Far from it.

The father has a duty to be fully involved in the raising of his childen. Of course the mother has most tiem with them as father is working but his life as well as the mothers change as soon as they become parents. The father should take turn in baby feedinga nd changing duties and when older taking an interest in the childs rapid developement and showing the child that he is there for the child at all times.

The father should also be aware of all schoolwork, hobbies and helping the child learn morals. Some children will favour one of the parents and will look to them for guidance and an example in social behaviour.
