Korean boom hits the Japan Record Awards with Big Bang

Korean boom hits the Japan Record Awards with Big Bang Big Bang accept their award Wednesday.

TOKYO —

Five-member Korean boy-band Big Bang was named Best New Artist at the 51st Japan Record Awards on Wednesday night. Member D-Lite, 20, commented in fluent Japanese after the win, “I didn’t expect we’d win such a big award… my hands are shaking.”

The group has swept away their Korean homeland, having won 35 different awards for their music, and have finally made their way into Japan’s music scene. Vocalist Sol, 21, thanked Japanese audiences, saying, “Please keep cheering us on, we’re looking forward to doing our best.”

Big Bang is known for their skillful singing and stylish dances, and hit the Oricon charts at number three in June with their debut song, “My Heaven.” Since then, they’ve released two more singles and one album, all of which have hit the top five.

The are adopting the Backstreet boys template. I wonder how the Johnnies will respond to this popularity. The Korean groups are seen as more manly. The J-girls are preferring that more and more. Especially as they get more exposure to other cultures. The J-groups will probably respond by being even more feminine. The herbivore man will kill the J-pop male star.

Big Bang? seriously?! their music sucks! Not all the members can sing. Some members can't even understand/speak Japanese and yet they venture into Japan. I totally disagree with the "commented in fluent Japanese" part. Tohoshinki is way better

Korean music has been invading Japanese ears since the 90s.

biglittleman: Blame that on anime's bishounen, now every little Japanese boy wants to look nothing short of gay. takuyaki: You seemed to have been talking about SMAP.

I love TOP, a member of Big Bang, the seconf from left, he is my ideal. Love their music, especially the song from the drama Iris.

GDragon's album was plagued with plagiarism issues. I don't think they're that big in Japan to get that award

Just another run of the mill rap group. They probably had it pretty tough in the hood with the man keeping them down and all that...

    @Wolfpack

They are not even a rap group. Do you know what you are even saying? They are like the Backstreet boys or N Sync, pop group. They sing and dance with one trying to rap on certain songs.

That show went for 3 hours! About an hour too long imo. Should have been like the old days when it was two hours long.

I guess they could be classed as fluent, but fluent (in my book) doesn't necessarily mean that their Japanese is super great.

I can listen to some of their songs forever, it is personal taste - some like them, some don't; I think Korean language sounds so good in songs.

Well of course that old kaiju Kitagawa would be behind bars if he didn't have a complete stranglehold over the compliant Japanese media....and Japanese boy bands might actually look like boys instead of girls if he wasn't dictating the taste of a nation.

Some of the members of Big Bang have excellent taekwondo skills, for example T.O.P. I wonder how many of the Japanese band members have martial arts skills. They all look so girly - yada.

I tried not to like Big Bang, but they are so pretty, and they have some freaking catchy songs. Also- man, Iris looks kind of awesome! Now I have to go find it so I can watch it!

I am looking forward to Iris-2 though I cannot imagine Iris without TOP, he was killed in the last episodes. I hope another member of Bing Bang will replace him. Big Bang have nice songs and are very talented, i agree.
