If you've never seen any of Koreeda's work, you've really missed out on some moving, humorous and important films.
I love this director, and rate him extremely highly - there is nothing he hasn't done that isn't complex and incredibly thoughtful and thought-provoking. I am looking forward to this a lot.
Sensato
Is there any relation between this film and the US TV series "Switched at Birth"?
Maria
@Sensato - Without knowing the US TV series, I would really doubt it. It's not a new idea anyway - baby-swapping is as old as story-telling itself.
Koreeda often focusses on issues relevant to Japan. This film sounds like he's commenting on the obsession on blood connection over emotional connection, and the pressure to have children of one'sown. Adoption, IVF, surrogate births, are all controversial topics here. The Hollywood Reporter reviewer seems not to know about this.

Sounds like a great flick. I will definitely give it a go.

I haven't seen a really good, moving Japanese film in a while...hope it's ok to get a little excited about this one!
megosaa
what's the japanese title? is there a sub version?
Maria
@megosaa: そして父になる (Soshite chichi ni naru) is the Japanese title. Outside of Japan there will of course be subtitles, but not, of course, in Japan.

I have added this film to me to-watch list now! I've always been interested in this film ever since I read the synopsis, but now I want to watch it even more.
