Kumi Koda performs 1st concert in Taiwan

TAIPEI —

Singer Kumi Koda, 26, performed her very first solo live concert at the National Taiwan University gymnasium in Taipei on Saturday.

While Koda’s fan club is called “Koda-gumi,” or The Koda Mob, her image as a seductive and sexy songstress has earned her the moniker “Seikan Kumicho,” or Sexual Mob Boss. In Taiwan, about 5,000 “Sexual Mob” members showed up to show respect to their leader, who appeared in a total of nine sexy outfits including a lavender glittery dress and a black mermaid costume.

Koda enchanted the crowd with a hot performance, belting out her famous “Cutey Honey” and 20 other songs. She also performed a collaboration song called “Twinkle” with Show Luo, 30, who is known as the Masaharu Fukuyama of Taiwan.

Koda’s 63 singles and albums have sold over 15 million copies and boosted her to the top of her genre. The “Sexual Godfather” promised her Taiwanese fans she’d pay them another visit next year for her 10th anniversary.

live" don't really mean "solo" and "live" in this context

It's "live" in the "Weekend at Bernie's" sense.

Shouldn't that be "Sexual Godess" or at least "Godmother"? Not that I think she is either.

    My life is now complete.

And we are expected to exchange Sakai for Ms. "Dirty Water". Great she played a college gym. Hoe about when Koda can sell out an actual venue in Taiwan.

Sorry, the media skewers Sakai who actually has talent, and gives this piece of trash publicity. That just really chaffes my back side. Some how I feel this is going to be deleted.

Umm how does Sakai have a lot of talent he is basically tone-deaf...

And Koda and Nakai are not even dating anymore I hear.

Live probably like all J POP, singing to recorded music performed by good session musos who never get any kudos for their tapes played at these events. Of course its hard for the solo to apply when there are dancers pictured in the back ground so I guess it means solo singing.

  • emimi at 12:27 AM JST - 6th October

The solo refers to the fact that she was the only musical act at the concert.

Keep on bringing down the ranking of Japan further.

Not a bad singer but really sluty and trashy.

  • presto345 at 05:40 PM JST - 6th October

It's difficult to express in words just how much class this girl lacks. Perfect that she's dating that amiable but equally talentless 40's beach-guy lookalike Nakai.

You can spout what you wish, but 15 million copies sold tell a different story.

Please tell me your criteria for musical greatness isn't how many records someone sells...

Perhaps you don`t live in Japan and therefore do not know that Japanese people will buy ANY MUSIC no matter how p***poor it is, as long as the singer is "kawaii" enough. The music scene over here makes me sick. Not that its much different than the trashy pop stars in the West, but thats another reason to never judge music by sales figures.

i think it has more to do with the marketing machine. if a singer is pushed as the new big thing, with the requisite amounts of tv/advertising appearances then people will buy into it because they desire to consume.

No comment on Kodas talent or looks... but I have to wonder about her detractors. How many CDs have YOU sold? How good do YOU look? If you wouldnt be confident putting your face up on a billboard... perhaps you should be less critical of the looks of others. If you ARE that good looking, then perhaps you should critique AFTER youve had your face up on billboards.

Im just saying we should all be a little less critical of others... The world is screwed up enough without people feeding into it.
