Kyoko Fukada to play English teacher in new TV drama

TOKYO —

Kyoko Fukada, 25, will star as an English teacher in NTV’s new summer drama. The still-untitled series takes place at a girls’ high school which starts accepting boys. Fukada’s character launches a club to teach her students ballroom dancing.

Fukada said, “Making this drama made me recall what I felt at high school when I was a student. It’s very nostalgic. I think I would have been a lot happier at school if I had been taught by the kind of teacher I play.”

The drama will be aired from July 15 on the NTV network nationwide.

Seems a bit sad though they promote ballroom dancing. With certain people on JT saying that Japanese people are rediscovering their pride in Japanese culture (which in itself is a very good thing) we see dramas like this show centred around ballroom dancing.

It would be great for a Japanese drama to actually break the mold and make a prime-time drama that doesn't involve something "imported" just becuase it'll have people say, "kakoii".

It seems a bit more sad (or funny) when considering what Japanese traditional art forms could be substituted for dancing when integrating these newly arriving boys into an ENGLISH class at a formerly all-girls' school. And make it entertaining.

Haiku Club? Sumo? Tea ceremony? Kabuki?

Since it appears to me that nearly all of the traditional art forms don't allow for the kind of boy-girl interaction that would draw viewers, "kakoii" is preferable to "tsumaranai."

(On a side note, I can't seem to get Van Halen's song "Hot for Teacher" out of my head...)

Having worked with her on her 2005 TV drama, "Fugoh Keiji", the answer is yes.

Can you say Take the Lead with Antonio Banderas? Great flick but I'm not sure it made any money. Perhaps it needs a unique Japanese take. Good luck to all.
