Clever guy, Jack Murtagh.

At the time, cinemas were supposed to destroy film prints at the end of their distribution run but Murtagh instead hoarded them in his garden shed, preserving many works that would otherwise have been lost to history.

Effectively stealing them, but in this case he helped to preserve hitchcocks legacy

a wild atmospheric melodrama about two sisters

Yeah, I think I saw that one... these two sisters try to open a beachside pizza shop somewhere in Chiba with the help of a psychotic truck driver, or something like that

Hope they find the last three reels somewhere.... It's got to be better than some of the stuff being released today....

I'm a bit dubious about this story. Quite a few years ago a mockumentary about finding lost reels from fictional New Zealand film maker Colin McKenzie. It suggested that he had produced an epic film, Salome, in the New Zealand outback and had introduced 'talkies' and color before Hollywood did.

However, many viewers didn't realize that it was a spoof and believed that it was true. I wonder if this is the same...

(If you are interested the mockumentary is called Forgotten Silver and was written and directed by Peter Jackson.)
