Everyone, WA4TKG would like to say that he doesn't much care for Madonna. He refuses to acknowledge any awareness of her at all. He has so much disdain that he will not even Google her. I would like to be the first to, in turn, acknowledge WA4TKG's disdaindedness for the woman who shall not be mentioned.

Thats a lot of disdain.

The entertainment business is filled with humans-turned-cartoon characters like Madonna, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and Donald Trump.

Let's face it some celebrities hold onto their fame and the limelight until they're past their prime. Ms. Madonna should call it a day and just retire. Maybe she was cool in the 90's, but she's way beyond relevance now. It's getting sad. Her most recent studio album, Rebel Heart is her worst selling album in 20 years. She has already proven herself to be the Queen of Pop back in the day. After all she has more top CD hits than any other artist in the history of the Billboard chart and the Beatles are second place with 34 top hits.

I second that. After "Erotica" early 90's, she should've retired. Funny how she still tries to act all freaky & sexy, but remember Drake's reaction after madonna kissed him on stage?

Wow, that's a lot of misogynistic and ageist remarks. Wasn't she the largest earner in terms of tour takings during her last tour about 2 years ago? If I remember correctly, Tina Turner was still strutting her backside when she was Madonna's age and I don't think she sold nearly as many records as Madonna and she never got this sort of abuse. And I never see this sort of backlash when the Rolling Stones show their faces.

As long as she still fills out stadiums and arenas then why not?

She's performed in Japan many times before, so that's not the biggest news. The biggest is the fact that she'll be performing in Bangkok, Hong Kong, Macau and Taipei. I think they're all firsts for her.

These 4 cities are getting cheated then. They missed madonna in her prime years.

Old Maj must be in need of funds i guess.

If male rockers and pop artists can perform into their 70's, why can't she?

13 ( +15 / -3 )

Not my cup of tea, but definitely talented (a word not often heard in music circles these days).

6 ( +11 / -5 )

Is she going to buy those tens of washlets this time again ?

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Crap singer, boring pop star. If you have to create controversy to sell records you have no talent.

-6 ( +3 / -9 )

Should be a real hit in Japan, what with its aging geriatric population and all. like the Stones and Paul McCartney etc etc.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

I wish she would just quit the entertainment world, take her money and do someting else. She was never really any good and always looked like she was over trying to get attention

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

And 10 years to late. I love Madonna's spirit but she's sad to watch live and still wearing what she wore 20 years ago.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

As they say, "haters gonna hate". Those haters are actually envious because they clearly DON'T have the ability to do what Madonna has done so they make fun of something they can never become... successful! 33+ years later and Madonna is still doing what she loves and getting paid well. Yeaaa, clearly, there's the model for success and Madonna living it. Just remember where she started, where she's been and how she's doing. A lot of hard work, good for her!

2 ( +5 / -3 )

If male rockers and pop artists can perform into their 70's, why can't she?

Because she was never much of a performer. She was more of a cultural phenomenon.

Can't play an instrument. Can barely sing. Used to be a passable dancer. And dancing is the hardest skill to maintain with age. Why can Paul McCartney still perform? Because he's an actual musician. (Although in fairness his voice isn't what it was.)

1 ( +5 / -4 )

One may not like her music.

One may not think she is much of a singer.

One may not think she is much of a musician.

One may not think she is much of a performer.

One may not think she is all that sexy or whatever.

Here's the thing:

How many artists are able to remain even remotely relevant for three decades and command top ticket prices?! And how many of those are solo female artists?!

Whatever you think of Madonna, she has earned some respect, even if it is only begrudging respect.

Nice narrative.... EXCEPT that it doesn't hold water.

From Wiki, only because it is faster to source this way:

According to Jesse Lawrence from Forbes, initial prices for the tour in the secondary markets indicated that it would become the most expensive concert tour of 2015. The average ticket for Rebel Heart Tour was valued at $452.33 in Madonna's secondary markets, a much higher total than her closest competitor, that of Taylor Swift with The 1989 World Tour, whose tickets were priced at $305.21 average. Madonna surpassed Fleetwood Mac as the artist with the most expensive tour (51.5% more) in 2015.[33] The October 24 show at Las Vegas became the most expensive date with average price of $949.21, while the cheapest tickets were available for $164.30 at the Edmonton date, according to Viagogo.[34] Lawrence also noted that the secondary market prices were much higher than The MDNA Tour, indicating a competitive scenario favorable for Madonna.[35]

Once available, tickets started selling out fast, and shows in Edmonton, Paris and Turin sold out within minutes after going on sale, resulting in the addition of additional shows in all cities.[36][37][38] Additional shows were also added in a number of cities in North America.[39][40] Live Nation partnered with gay geosocial networking app Grindr, and posted advertisements there for the tour, resulting in more ticket sales.[41] For the Australian dates, the Telstra presale resulted in all the cheaper tickets being sold, with only the VIP packages and the extra expensive ones being left for sale. Madonna's fan club members had first access to the Australian tickets, then a Citibank presale for card holders, followed by the Telstra presale till July 2, another presale for Live Nation members, and finally general public tickets on sale from July 6.[42]

Hate her as much as you want, slag her off all day long, the fact is that there is a huge appetite for her music and her concerts worldwide.

Respect!

just read a favorable review of her show in nyc this week in the guardian u.k.

I think the antipathy towards Madonna comes because she typifies much of what is wrong, vapid and mediocre about today's popular music. She's like the Henry Ford of music (another Detroiter). He didn't invent cars, and he didn't make great cars. But he made a lot of ugly and ordinary that sold to people who otherwise wouldn't have a car. And made a fortune doing it.

Talented artists will still make a living. I remember when Madonna and Cyndi Lauper broke out in New York. They were rivals of a sort. One of them was a nice and talented person. The other was crassly ambitious. While Cyndi may have to scramble a bit more to make a living, she's leaving a legacy. In 50 years, some people might hear her music and find it irresistable. I'm fairly sure that few people will be listening to Madonna songs after that time. They are mostly bland and like 1000 other songs, but they are propped up by force of personality and a marketing machine that still works.

Very few, because they rise and fall on their looks. Live by the sword, die by the sword.

LOL I remember that as well. That really grossed him out.

As for her Asian tour stops, a little surprised she's headed to HK, Macau and TW but skipping mainland China. Some political issues there, I suppose.

No disrepect to Cyndi Lauper, but come on! You're living on cloud cuckoo land. For a start Cyndi has hardly made the charts for the past one or two decades. And she is not able to sell out stadiums across the world like Madonna who has and continues to make hit records/albums. Again no disrepect, I liked Cyndi (and her accent).

Anyone who thinks this is about sexism, please answer one question: Do you think Beiber will be pulling in the crowds 36 years from now, when he's Madonna's age?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

She was rubbish then ... and she is still rubbish now.

She has done more to harm, damage and mislead women then any other single individual I have ever come across. And to see that she is appearing on stage at a wrinkly 57 is nothing more than mutton trying to dress up as a lamb.

And "baby" Beiber too .... a legend in his own mind and not an ounce of musical ability in his whole body.

There is no shame in giving people what they want, and doing something that's tried and tested. Three decades after her Like a Virgin tour, Madonna is up for another world tour this year and, she's fit enough to put on a spectacular show.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Pukey2: Lots of people have done the equivalent of selling out stadiums in the past and disappeared. Madonna is all in the marketing, which is based on the current mindset. In the future, all that will be left is her music - without all the contemporary trappings. It will have to stand on its own, and it simply won't.

Conversely, lots of artists barely made a living and are now seen as legends. Van Gogh, Robert Johnson, etc. That's because their art was sincere, which is a timeless quality. Madonna, sorry, is all about the money. Her music panders to current trends and reflects nothing of the depth of her soul. They are like advertising jingles.

Like a virgin..... at 57? It's comical.......

Kate Bush. Talented, timeless and doesn't resort to publicity stunts and controversy to sell her records. She's been going for 37 years.

@zones Expensive live shows in Vegas are older artists. In many business that has restaurants display large Elvis picture and other stars pics on the walls of people walking to eatery from their main business area. Among these, young Madonna's is a lot larger than Elvis in front of a piano'. I think Vegas show promoter like her because her show produce more profit.

@Elizabeth Heath I flew to London to see Kate Bush last year, but I'll also go see Madonna. I really don't think there's a need to slam performers who have enduring popularity. Obviously many people still like them. I respect any artist who has such longevity and worldwide popularity. Saw the Stones, McCartney, Bowie, Springsteen, U2, Michael Jackson, The Police etc not necessarily that I was a huge fan, but I think their music will last a long time and I wanted to experience what they offered live

She will also sing in Bangkok, Hong Kong, Macau and Taipei which will be the first time for her to sing in Taiwan.

'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''

it seems that show promoters arranged her tours in affluent Asian countries.

Who wants to place real money on the fact that she will sell out EVERY show lined up in Asia. Frankly, I'm from the era and indeed we used to sing the "no talent", "won't last" song at that time -- Here we are decades later and looking back at her you've got to give her credit for what she has accomplished. I also agree with @Sue Jones -- It seems like the trolls come out with these outlandish opinions so that they can Hate for the sake of Hating... (sad)

Likewise I've been fortunate to catch shows (in recent years) with U2, Elton John, Bowie, David Gilmour, Duran Duran, New Order... And the day I get a chance to see Danny Elfman get back with Boingo for a "reunion" -- I'm on the first flight anywhere. But, this isn't new people, lots of old stars come back and give fans a few great memories (even in Japan!)... Case in Point: Southern All Stars, SMAP, Dreams Come True... I saw a Dreams Come True with my wife in LA, and the two remaining members still put on a good show IMHO..

So just calm down, don't hate, look at it in perspective (Madonna isn't trying to build her career, but rather to give fans a taste of their youth) -- If I have the opportunity, I would attend the show as well; just for the experience.

If male rockers and pop artists can perform into their 70's, why can't she?

She could if her musical persona wasn't tied to her sex appeal. There are tons of older female rockers that are still doing there thing many years past their heyday. Pat Benatar comes to mind. Madonna did the sexually shocking thing to get recognition (see the the nasty young Madonna writhing on stage in a white dress singing 'Like a Virgin'). Not even people from her same generation want to see her doing that schtick now. If she would concentrate on her music she would be fine. Keep it classy Grandma Madonna.

Old hat - I really don't understand how she's still pilling crowds.

@commanteer

Excuse me? It's been more than 30 years since "Like a virgin" and"Material Girl" came out, and guess what? I still hear those songs on oldies radio stations from time to time. Same with Cyndi Lauper and "Girls just want to have fun". It's been 30 years and people still listen to Madonna!!! So when you say "I'm fairly sure that few people will be listening to Madonna songs after that time (50 years)", I wonder, how much more time does it have to pass?
