TOKYO —

Miss Sophia University will replace the weather girl for Fuji TV’s morning infotainment program “Mezamashi TV,” the TV station has announced. Misato Nagano, 22, Miss Sophia University 2006, will replace Aiko Kaito, 25, current weather girl for the program, from March 30. Kaito is being promoted to the position of emcee for an entertainment program.

Nagano said, “I have been watching the program since I was small. I cannot believe I will be the weather girl. My family still don’t believe this.” Kaito gave Nagano a piece of advice by saying, “You will have to wake up very early in your new life. Eat well and go for it!”

Good girls and colorful weather display distract me from actual weather conditions.

Well, that degree from a prestigious university was put to good use.

    Girls be ambitious!

Does she really need a meteorology degree? I mean, her job is to report the weather, not predict it. Someone else can do that for her.

"Well, that degree from a prestigious university was put to good use."

If it comes with a good salary, then does that really matter?

I would guess that over 50% of our weather reports are now done by women & they do a good job. So no complaints from myself.

Ms. Kaito is being promoted to the position of emcee for an entertainment program.

Great to see a career path in TV!

so does anybody here really believes that all TV announcers have degrees in economics, political science, sports and the other things they present? they should know how to present stuff, the analysts come with the explanations

good going there! much better than that fat bucket on CNN.

Another product of an "elite" university being used because she is cute and will have to dumb down a lot to do a "good job"

Well, I hope "Miss Sophia U" has another job/career/life plan aside from being the latest cutie-pie weather gaa-ru. As soon as she hits 29, she's history. Such is life in this completely crazed age oriented Japan. I can only hope she meets her "Mr. Weatherman" before hitting the ridiculously young yet societally-imposed barrier of 29. Cripes.

perhaps she was hired so that old guys @ fuji could sexually harass. what better way to empower yourself than to degrade a beautiful, intelligent young, english-speaking j-girl from a presitigious university. i keed.

She is more qualified than anyone reading this.

The qualifications for the job are, realistically:

    A) Cute B) Speaks well enough

If Fuji hired a woman who meets the requirements and is university educated as well, so much the better. Considering that she has enough of a brain to get a degree (save that discussion for another time) she'll probably do a lot of learning about meteorology on the job and become much more knowledgeable than any of us.

I don't see why there are so many negative comments. An intelligent young woman gets a position on a national TV show. What's wrong with this? It will probably make more young girls want to get a degree at a good school.

    Good for Ms. Nagano!

I think its just fine myself. However, I cannot vouch for her intelligence. She is definitely a cutie-pie though.

What everyone needs to keep in mind is that the reason we have cutie-pie weather girls is because so many of you out there will tune out if its an old crusty but very qualified meteorologist. Its nothing bad on her or the network. Its the viewing public.

However, I cannot vouch for her intelligence.

Well, I would not go as far as vouching for her intelligence either. However, Sophia is a very good school and I think it is pretty safe to say she is probably way above average intelligence.

She is definitely a cutie-pie though.

    Yup!

I don't know that I would tune out as I generally watch the weather report to see what the weather will be. However, it is always nice to have something nice to look at while learning what the weather will be.

I can't strand Mezamashi with its useless ENTA news and annoying background music. I swear that music is responsible for half of the suicides in Japan. And probably more than half of the random murders.

As for cute girls, I love 'em. Cute chicks from Jouchi Dai, even better.

Still, first thing in the morning, just give me homely old NHK.

she should watch the movie "the weather women" to get a few tips.

Kinniku, sounds like you would tune out and then tune in to the channel with this hottie dishing out the weather report! Not that I criticize you or anyone else for that.

I only have a problem with people who throw stones in glass houses. You are only guilty of knowing a cutie-pie when you see one.

However, Sophia is a very good school

Article says she was Miss Sopia University. I have no idea what the requirements are for that.

    Hi, Likeitis!

As we have discovered, we both have very good taste!

The Miss Sophia contest is a part of Sophia University's annual Sophia Festival. Check out the contestants for this year at their website. Nice competition!
