maybe she should encourage people to fear attacking countries that might retaliate in a particularly painful way...

Good for her. Although I think most sane people are already afraid of nuclear attack.

    ...duck and cover?

  • NYC_Samurai at 12:08 PM JST - 6th August

my grandmother told me the circumstances at that time, which was shocking to me

Pretty obvious which side of the story Granny divulged.

Stupid statement - how could anyone not fear a nuclear attack. Just because she has family who survived Hiroshima makes her an expert? i have family who survived Nazi camps in Poland but doesn't cause me to say i want more people to fear Concentration Camps....

I am so glad that models are so smart that they will inform the rest of us of the dangers of the world, thank god for people like here.

yes, people and countries should keep this in mind. But als she should know that keeping a big army and producing lots of weapons can lead to the demise of a country, e.g. USA are now much poorer than Japan, they should be even encouraged to produce more weapons and annihilate themselves. That is a logical sad end to an evil empire.

"I’d like the younger generations to have a greater sense of fear of nuclear weapons".

Excellent thought here ... yes, we need to live in fear for our entire lives. Why hasn't someone thought of this before?

Duck and cover? Bah, Japan is too small for it! Won't be able to hide my big but anywhere.

At least one bold Japanese woman who has an opinion on a political subject, respect to her. Do not know her, but I am glad she voices an opinion against weapons of mass destruction.

I wonder why when Japan is against the nuclear weapons, Japan continues its support to a country developing such weapons. Maybe the funds provided by Japan go for developing such weapons.

Geeze. Does anyone else think FEAR is not really the right word? Maybe she should have said that we should diligently work at making sure that they are never used. The easiest way would be to eradicate them. People created them. People can destroy them. Why fear? I fear nuclear weapons as I would fear robots. I fear random food poisoning and drunk taxi drivers 50 times more.

Here is a brain bender. If we absolutely KNEW that having nuclear weapons prevented their use, it would make sense to have more of them, not fewer. That is a huge IF, but if it were true, FEAR would not produce the best policy.

How about nuclear accidents? People building power stations on fault lines or not maintaining them is far scarier than what Israel will do.

  • Mocheake at 01:08 PM JST - 7th August

"Nuclear power plants aren't dangerous, only nuclear weapons are", said my good friend from Chernobyl. Why is this news?

  • Lovemustang at 03:30 PM JST - 7th August

Not a few people have commented here that ordinary people understand the horror of nuclear weapons - so no need to remind everyone of that. That's not true at all. For example, an ex-SDF high-ranking officer insisting Japan should go nuclear is getting extremely popular recently. And think about countries like North Korea, Iran, Pakistan.. Why can you say it's already enough to speak up we don't need nuclear weapons? I think it's great and necessary that an attractive woman like Aizawa publicly warns the danger of nuclear weapons. When it comes to appealing for the elimination of nuclear armaments, there is no "too much". Don't get side-tracked and let's just receive her message, right?
