NHK to broadcast live programs shot with an ultra high sensitivity camera for first time in TV history

TOKYO —

On Sunday night, NHK will broadcast spectacular live footage from “The Cosmic Shore” – a world that is neither terrestrial nor extra-terrestrial, where the blue sky changes into the jet black of space. Interactions between the Earth and space occur there, bringing about such spectacles as auroras and shooting stars. However, until now, a lack of camera sensitivity prevented broadcast of “The Cosmic Shore” on Earth.

NHK will be using an ultra high sensitivity camera on the International Space Station (ISS), for the first time in TV history, with the cooperation of JAXA (Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency). This ultra high sensitivity camera, developed by NHK through extensive research and trials, enables minimal light to be recorded in a clear HD color image.

For the programs, Satoshi Furukawa, a Japanese astronaut on the ISS, will be both cameraman and reporter.

"This ultra high sensitivity camera, developed by NHK through extensive research and trials," and huge money i guess. But that doesn't matter since NHK is getting huge govt subsidies apart from subscription fees from the viewers.

That is cool, but can't we see the same thing real time outdoors twice a day?

Why is NHK, a broadcaster, involved in "extensive" camera development? That should be the job of Panasonic, Sony, etc. TV viewers and taxpayers should be obliged to fund such research on hardware, a job the private sector can do much better.

Sorry I sometimes critics NHK as a govt mouthpiece, but they do make amazing programmes. Good job guys, I will surely tune in.

Oh a space station..thank US/NASA leading the way again. NHK sell a few commercials make a few bucks...and stop forcing folks to pay if you are a public service. But nice camera.

Except the private sector hasn't done better. NHK camera technology related to TV recording etc., is the highest.
