NHK to broadcast special programs on 6-month anniversary of Great East Japan Earthquake
Entertainment ( 18 )
TOKYO —
NHK will broadcast a series of special programs on Sept 10 and Sept 11 to mark the six-month anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake.
While progress is seen in the disaster stricken areas, many victims are struggling to rebuild their lives from scratch. NHK will address the issues that need to be solved, delivering the voices of people facing up to the challenges.
Goro Taguchi, who heads NHK’s cross-department project on the Great East Japan Earthquake, said, “We want to fulfill our missions as a public broadcaster by delivering programs that support the recovery and encourage people. I would also like to share with the world the latest situation of the disaster stricken areas.”
The programs include:
Sept 10, 19:30 – 20:45 on General TV: “The Great East Japan Earthquake: Six Months of Lumbering Reconstruction”
Six months on from the earthquake, some 82,000 victims still live as evacuees, and many feel left behind. The lack of financial resources, difficulty of planning and the ongoing nuclear crises hinder the reconstruction of many communities. The program looks into various issues surrounding the disaster stricken areas, and using a questionnaire collected from local governments, addresses possible solutions.
Sept 10, 21:00 – 22:13 on General TV: “Earthquake Recovery”
Professor Michael Sandel of Harvard University will discuss issues surrounding the recovery with university students in Tokyo, Harvard University and Fudan University, via the Internet. Prof Sandel will pose questions such as: what is the liability of government in the case of natural disasters, to what extent should it compensate personal losses, and whether the same principle applies to the nuclear accident?
Sept 11, 21:00 – 21:53 on General TV: ”The Great East Japan Earthquake: The Unknown Threats of Mega-Tsunami”
The program features the unknown power of tsunami that turned fishing boats and fuel tanks into “weapons” that burned the cities as well as the deficiency of seawalls in minimizing the damage. As the second series of NHK Special “Mega-Tsunami” broadcast through various international broadcasters, the program will re-examine the destructive power of tsunami using various footage gathered by NHK. The program is also scheduled to be broadcast on NHK World TV, an international English-language television service, at 10 a.m. on Oct 1.
Sept 11, 18:05 – 18:50 on Radio 1: “How to face radiation ~food, life, future~“
Professor Masaru Kaneko from Keio University and Professor Tatsuhiko Kodama from the University of Tokyo will discuss various issues regarding radiation, including effects on soil and food, protection of children, and the long-term issue of decontamination.

I hope it brings up the major problem that after six months, most victims have received none of the almost ¥300 billion donated to the Japanese Red Cross?

Hopefully it kicks the government in the pants to get this resolved. No one is asking any questions anymore in the media about why this the power plants are still not under control.

Six months from the quake, 10 years from 9/11. At least it's not raining, so I can leave the TV and go for a walk.

Zichi, you looking for that 300 Billion Yen?
No one is ever going to see that. Most of it went to the government anyway allowing them to decide what to do with the money. It's a no-brainer, KEEP IT. These governement officials, deep pockets, lawyers and companies are all in agreement. It's easier to amputate than compensate.

They were and are in really bad shape, that's why. They aren't scheduled to be under control until next year, and we all know that is optimistic.

NHK is PART OF THE WHOLE PROBLEM! NHK is owned and controlled BY THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT! Do they want to scare us here in Tokyo and make everyone run for the hills?? Oh, no! Now some idiots are saying they want to make a new amusement park for CHILDREN only about 20 kms from the Daichi Fukushima nuclear power plant, hmmm, will NHK report this news too? Let many kids be real close to the center of RADIATION?? Somebody is bribing somebody to try and make us think that everything here in the Tokyo area is fine and dandy, oh no more earthquakes, no more radiation, safety Japan is A OK?? What a bunch of BS!! And not the BS like channel BS of NHK but you guys understand IMHO??

I read a few articles about that power-plant. But couldn't find a reference that it will be a kiddies amusement park, all they said that they will give access same was as many factories now have guided tours.
Of course open for corrections via links, etc that show otherwise.

Sorry, so if Disney corp, Namco decides to build a solar plant it automatically means that it will be an amusement park.
I am sure that any real plant operator will lets run it and realign the solar panels even if it means that less power is generated.
Come on get real and use the ol noggin.

I am well aware that the distribution of the donated money is not the problem of the Japanese Red Cross, which as of June 21, had collected ¥269 billion ($3,4 billion) and had handed over ¥229 billion ($2.9 billion) to the Prefecture Grant Disbursement Committees. Since June 29 the JRC have received a further ¥33.6 billion ($416 million).
The problem isn't with the JRC, it's with the committees. The mayor of Sendai city has stated he does not know when the JRC donations he received will be given to the victims and survivors.
Many or most of the people who donated to the IRC and JRC thought the money was for the victims and survivors of the Mar.11 disaster. But local governments are trying to claim the money for their own use in the reconstruction. I think that is just plain wrong.
I think the people in the earthquake and tsunami disaster areas are being forgotten by the national government.

Very difficult to comment on a broadcast which hasn't been aired...

I wished NHK on the BS channel would air their programs without that annoying sign asking you to sign up and pay for their services. Very annoying indeed!
