TOKYO —
Comedy duo NON STYLE picked up a handy 10 million yen this week when they were voted the June winners of Softbank’s “S-1 Battle” contest. Nearly 800,000 Softbank mobile phone users voted on various comedic video clips from June 1 through June 28. NON STYLE finished on top for their video of Akira Ishida, 29, and his reaction after being splashed with hot and cold water at the same time, with a little Tabasco thrown in for good measure.
Ishida and Yusuke Inoue, 29, were presented with a check for 10 million yen at Softbank’s head office in Shiodome. Ishida was asked by a member of the press if he would use his share of the bounty to hold a wedding with the woman he is currently seeing, to which he said: “I haven’t given any thought to that, but sure I’d like to buy her a present.” He also said that that NON STYLE had finished recording their entries for July and August, and that if they can take out the grand prize of 100 million yen, awarded to the best entry over the whole year, then he would like to buy a TV program.
TV commentator Terry Ito, 59, expressed his bewilderment repeatedly during his weekly morning show, saying: “They won 10 million yen for that? You’ve got to be joking.”

I just watched it and it was about the dumbest thing I've ever seen. 10 million yen? Jesus

Har har. And afterwards they went out for pizza and ice cream and Ishida got to ride Inoue's tricycle and everybody clapped their hands together and made lots of money . . .

10 million yen? That is the last straw for Softbank. I am switching over this month due to their poor service, extortionate rates and ridiculously expensive advertising campaigns which is probably part of the reason their rates are so high.

i don't think it should surprise anyone that hard-hitting, satirical social satire doesn't feature on japan's comic horizon

My girlfriend and I have decided to cancel our Softbank accounts because of this flagrant waste of money.
