Papa Papaya bonds with daughter over curry udon
Entertainment ( 13 )
TOKYO —
Talento and choreographer Papaya Suzuki, 42, celebrates his first performance together with his 7-year-old daughter Ayaka in a TV commercial for Yamasa’s “Hiyashi Curry Udon” sauce. To commemorate the occasion, the two visited Yamada Soy Sauce’s Tokyo headquarters.
Papaya said that he was a bit troubled because his daughter often calls him scary, but, “Even though I was worried, it looks like she had a good time. I’m glad this became a good opportunity to create some memories together as a family.” Ayaka commented, “It was fun!”
In the commercial, both Papaya and his daughter, wearing the celebrity’s trademark afro and matching red aloha shirts, sit around a table with Yamasa’s sauce displayed prominently. With the happy birthday song playing in the background, the two have perfectly matched movements, chowing down on curry udon made with the sauce. The commercial ends with a punch of comedy as the pair’s afros gradually transform from hair into giant turbans.

What an insensitive if not outright racist commercial. As they eat the curry their hair turns into turbans? Yeah, nothing wrong with that.

Another advertisement masquerading as 'news'.

I like the Papaya character (unlike other local TV talents, he actually can do something well), but why is this news?
And "anatsusgami", a turban is not a "race", just as little as a bowler hat is. Losen up.

Bonding over food ? I guess kids and fathers have nothing else to bond over here.

I agree with WilliB, their afros turning into turbins is not racist. It's cute. The kid's cute. I do think that this IS news in the entertainment section. It's the first time Papaya's daughter has made a commercial. For those of you commenting on if this is newsworthy or not, if it's not news you are interested in, then why read it, or for that matter, why comment on it?

Concur with others here, Papaya is not a bad TV celebrity, and having him and his daughter in a commercial IS entertainment news. Compared to most talento that just sit around for an hour on TV spitting out kawaii and oishii every so often, Papaya has real talent and has paid his dues by other means than being cute and wearing revealing clothes. Not that I am knocking the hotties, but most have no other talent other than that.

I love Papaya. He's so damn hilarious and I'm glad he's doing something with his daughter, truly a family moment.
And I agree with noirgaijin, this is more news worthy then some "talent" that all they do is just talk about how delicious the cake they're eating is.

I find it hard to believe that WilliB needs an explaination as to how this commercial is possibly racist. I therefore will not waste my breath. While I take offence, I am aware that there are those who would take this lightly.

ANOTSUSAGAMI - you already wasted our time, so please waste a breadth and tell us all what the heck is wrong with the commercial? WHAT? How is he offending anyone (except crazy paranoics) by wearing an Afro-like wig, or if the wig becomes a turban while eating I-don't-know-what curry?

I like Papaya as well, a pretty cool guy. Plus his Oyaji dancers are cool too.

Ebisen- why I wouldn't go so far as to call it racist, I believe this commercial could definitely be seen as insensitive to East-Indians. Instead of acting so indignant at the thought, why don't you ask a few of them? Then again, if you're one of those gaijin in Japan who enjoy acting the clown for the amusement of our Japanese hosts, nevermind..
