The "nationwide moral outrage" was the lots of Japanese gaping in widemouthed disbelief at how much the police overreacted towards Kusanagi's drunken escapade, an event you can witness on any given weeknight, anywhere in Japan, among regular Joes (or Taros, I suppose), resulting in little more than a timeout at the local koban, followed by a patrol car lift home and a heartfelt, "Be careful," as you're patted on the bum and sent into your home to sleep it off.
Most people weren't disgusted with Kusanagi. They were angry with the police and their obvious inconsistent application of the law.
LFRAgain: Kusanagi mouthed off to, resisted, and even fought a little with a police officer and the others called in to help when they tried to get him to calm down and put his clothes on. So not only was it drunken and disorderly conduct and indecent exposure, he could also have been reigned up on assault charges and even resisting arrest. I'm not saying he was doing anything more than your average Joe Tanaka, but was what they did really inconsistent with others who would have done the same, or would they have been LESS tolerant were it not a national celebrity?
I think what all the Japanese were worried about was that it might mean SMAP is (finally) finished; like it nearly was when that other member hit the police officer with his car when he pulled out in a rage (he wasn't charged either, of course).
Fine, so he wasn't punished (enough... not at all). But for the public to forget so quickly is just silly. I've lost all respect for the man, and when he gets back into the drinking again and does something else, I'm sorry, but I probably won't be able to help saying 'I told you so'.
On July 24, 2011, I think I'll just fire a bullet into my old analog TV and stop watching for good. The posters in JT are more entertaining, funnier and their opinions far less politically correct. And if you guys wanna get drunk and go nekkid, be my guest!
Hatoyama apologized for his previous statements saying something along the lines of him hoping Kusanagi does his best to promote digital TV or some such. In addition, reports also said that Kusanagi is going to work for free promoting digital TV for the next two years until analog TV is finished. So, Kusanagi probably ended up saving the government quite a bit of money in the end.

well of course, its exciting for bored Japanese housewives that one of their moronic celebrities likes to take off his clothes and show his thimble.

kanadamanada,

Altria, I'd love to see that one!
One thing about the article, there is nothing "POP" about Kusanagi! The whole group shouldn't be singing live.

Never noticed how much he looks like Michael Jackson.

And I thought he would only stick to the 'oppai guessing' (fake or not?) show from the other night.

Is he being treated for alcoholism?
If not, government is taking a big risk. More then 60% of alcoholics relapse within a year after treatment.
And what if he will get arrested again? They will look for an alcoholic deer?
