Ringo Starr to tour Japan Feb 25-March 1

TOKYO —

Former Beatle Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band will play four concerts in Japan from Feb 25 to March 1.

Starr, 72, last toured Japan in 1995 when he played at the Budokan in Tokyo. On this tour, which will follow gigs in Australia and New Zealand, he will play at Zepp Arena in Tokyo on Feb 25-26, Zepp Hall Nagoya on Feb 27 and Zepp Hall Osaka on March 1. Tickets are 10,500 yen.

The band is the same line-up which just completed a North American tour this past summer and features Steve Lukather (Toto), Richard Page (Mr Mister), Todd Rundgren, Mark Rivera, Gregg Rolie (Santana & Journey) and Gregg Bissonette.

“The tour this summer was just GREAT - I love playing with this band and I can’t wait to get back out and play with them again,” Starr said on his website. “I am looking forward to revisiting Japan with the All Starrs and of course New Zealand and Australia. Peace & Love!”

The tour is being produced by Dave Hart and fans can expect to hear a jukebox worth of hits, including “It Don’t Come Easy,” “Photograph,” “With A Little Help From My Friends,” “Yellow Submarine” and “Wings,” from Starr’s recently released 17th solo record, “Ringo 2012” (Hip-O/Ume).

Mixed feelings about this. Ringo might be just going through the motions with mostly mediocre songs but that won't stop people from paying big prices to see a Beatle legend. And if he can get away with this, more power to him. Every other aging rock musician is cashing in. Why can't he?

He hasn't given up the fun. That's what rockin' is all about. So says Rokatari.

Steve Lukather is one of the most underrated guitar players ever. HIs work on the Dune soundtrack was amazing. I'd pay the ticket price just to see him (but I won't pay the Shinkansen ticket price to get to Tokyo from Iwate). Todd Rundgren is a legendary performer in his own right. And Gregg Bissonette is a fantastic drummer whose resume includes jazz, world music, classic rock and heavy metal recordings and tours with some of the finest musicians in history. This is truly an All Star Band - not just Ringo. I wonder if Ringo will include 'No no no' in his set list?

What is this an "I need the money" tour?

This is what musicians do - make music. If there was no demand there would be no tour. Sometimes folks forget that this is how these folks make their living.

I went to one of these All-Stars gig a few months back - old rockers from Journey, Voyager, Toto. What made the gig excellent was how much fun they seemed to be having, just playing, for themselves, and for people who love their songs - as tobolski says, it's their job, but overwhelmingly it's surely what they love to do as well. I think it's great that they all band together. I bet this Starr gig will be a lot of fun too.

It's not all about Ringo. Few years ago, Ringo's Allstar Band consisted of Mark Farmer of Grand Funk Railroad, the late John Entwistle, the great bass player for the Who, and Randy Bachman of Guess Who, and Simon Kirke from Bad Company on drums. They put on a great show.
