Actress Rinko Kikuchi, 29, has a new boyfriend, media report. The star of Vietnamese-French director Tran Anh Hung’s movie adaptation of Haruki Murakami’s novel “Norwegian Wood” (to be released in Japan Dec 11), which is now wowing crowds at the 67th Venice Film Festival, is dating celebrated American director Spike Jonze.
The pair made no effort to conceal their affection from the gaze of festival-goers and were seen kissing and holding hands in front of the cream of the movie industry.
According to one source, the couple met in December of last year when Jonze was in Japan publicizing “Where the Wild Things Are.” They are said to have hit it off from the word go. Kikuchi’s agency has acknowledged the relationship, stating, “It appears they started seeing each other recently.”
It is believed the pair arrived at the festival together having flown from New York, where Kikuchi has a base of operations. The couple are reported to be planning to leave the festival together when it draws to a close and return to New York. Jonze, 40, was formerly married to Academy Award-winning director, screenwriter and actress Sofia Coppola, 39. The couple divorced in 2004.

My point about the age omission (now corrected, thank you JT) is that the media will often mention the age of a famous woman, but not that of a male celebrity. Which is sexist.

Maria: That's not true. In the media the man's age, in relation to celebrity couples, is usually also mentioned, particularly when there's a gap such as this. Why it's not mentioned here is probably because it's really not much of a story, and no one in Japan (Japanese, sorry) likely knows who Jonze is anyway. Beyond that, they do quite often mention the man's age unless he is not at all famous.
I do agree that there IS more emphasis on the woman's age, but while I may agree it's a kind of mild sexism, it's not going to change any time soon, if at all.
As for Kikuchi and Jonze, good on them. Not a huge fan of either, but I'm happy they're happy. As for Norwegian Wood, I am SO looking forward to it! Tran Anh Hung is an AMAZING director.
