Ahead of Father's Day on June 15, screenwriter Kankuro Kudo was among the winners of the 33rd annual "Best Father Award" this week at the "Suteki na Oto-san," or "Fantastic Dads" award ceremony.
The "Best Father Award" is given by the Japan Men's Fashion Association to men who have helped create a bright and fun home life for their families.
Besides Kudo, who wrote the screenplay for the NHK drama series "Ama-chan," London Olympic boxing gold medalist Ryota Murata and Aichi Gov Hideaki Omura also received awards.
Kudo, who has one daughter, said that he believes his award was presented to him because he has always tried to not only be the best father possible, but also the best husband, Sports Nippon reported. "I am truly most grateful to have the beautiful family I have," he said.

What a waste of time and energy (the award that is, not being a good father)

Best fatherist!

I'm not a grammar expert, but something about this headline doesn't seem right. How many 'best father(s)' can there be?

The awards are given in different categories such as sports and entertainment.

Sure would love to know what these guys do to deserve the title. I see many amazing dads who work regular jobs and manage to find the time to be good role models and have an impact. Why do they awards only go towards the rich and famous?

I guess I'm stating the obvious, but this is mostly just made-up crap for the sake of marketing.

I'm with tmarie on this one. Kudo says he tries to do his best, but simply providing money through vast success does not make one a great father in my books. My guess is they did not look very hard, and did not look at all at your average Joe Tanaka, to find whom they chose to market certain products.

I think a "Worst ........." version of these awards would be a lot more amusing. Although there'd be too many candidates to mention.

Oh, they exist, and Japan wins pretty much every year, be it the lap pillow, the strong arm pillow, the cut-through-the-traffic-bicycle bell harness, cold bra, AKB, or what have you, they are just not usually as widely announced. There is always a company behind these silly awards, and always tarento who can barely manage a smile in the press shots when they get them.

Yes, it's commercial garbage, but if celebs can provide a more engaged model of fatherhood, why not?
