Sean Penn to play Larry in 'Three Stooges' movie
Entertainment ( 11 )
NEW YORK —
Sean Penn is going slapstick. The studio MGM says the double Oscar winner has signed on to play Larry in the Farrelly brothers’ big-screen update of “The Three Stooges.”
Jim Carrey was “in negotiations” for the role of Curly, said MGM spokesman Grey Munford. The studio first featured the stooges in a series of shorts and features beginning in 1933.
Munford would not confirm reports that Benicio Del Toro will play Moe.
He said said filming begins this fall on the comedy, which is expected to be released in 2010.
The casting of a serious actor like Penn in the assuredly goofy comedy isn’t such a stretch: The actor launched his storied career as goofball Jeff Spicoli in “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.”

What a terrible idea. Is Hollywood so bankrupt for ideas? I love the Three Stooges and have been watching them for 40 years. No one could ever portray them and their antics. Hands off!

I agree with smartacus. Somehow I just can't see any remake of the Three Stooges, no matter who plays the roles to be succesful. For those of us who grew up with the Three Stooges this is almost blasphemy.

I agree with Ivan and Smarticus. Jim Carrey is completely awful. Sean Penn isn't funny, and can anyone see him getting repeatedly slapped by another actor on a set? It's a disaster in the making.. lol

Wasn't the whole point of the Stooges that they never had enough to say to make a real plot or any worthwhile dialog? Just nyaargh, whyiougghta, and slapping. Why does anyone think that is worth reworking?

Marx Brothers would have been a better choice.

I'm willing to bet the movie will be better than people here expect. I saw a documentary on the the Three Stooges once and it was quite fascinating. If this is a movie about them as people, it could really be good.

We can only hope. Not for the movie, but to watch him getting repeatedly slapped.

The Three Stooges worked because each episode was only as long as the premise could remain funny - 20 minutes.

Benicio Del Toro is a great choice to play Moe.
Jim Carrey as Curly? Nyuk nyuk nyuk! Don't think that's gonna work.
Sean Penn might be able to pull off Larry.
Hope they don't screw this up and release it in color.
