Soak in a nice hot spring bath with Ted

So, have you seen the movie "Ted" yet? If you have, I’m sure many of you will agree that it’s an absolutely hilarious movie (probably not profound or enlightening in any way, and you may even lose a couple of brain cells watching it, but yes, definitely hilarious). Well, it appears the antics of the cute teddy bear with a bad mouth and a dirty mind has captured the hearts of movie goers in Japan, because as of last weekend, the movie is the top box office hit in Japan.

But what does a middle-aged borderline delinquent teddy bear have to do with a hot spring bath?

It so happens that "Ted’s" Japanese Facebook site will be giving away 10 trips for two to a hot spring (onsen) hotel as part of a promotional campaign in appreciation of the movie’s enormous success in Japan. And the best part is that the winners will receive a life-size doll of Ted in addition to the trip.

According to the campaign website, the trip is supposed to be a reward for Ted for working so hard to promote the movie in Japan, and of course, Ted doesn’t want to go to an onsen all by himself, thus the free trips so Ted will have someone to keep him company, because you know how Ted hates to be lonely, right? Winners of the prize will be greeted by the life-size Ted doll upon their arrival at the onsen hotel and will get to take the doll back with them. Darn, that is sooo cute, where do they get these ideas?

Unfortunately for our readers outside Japan, you do have to live in the country to enter the give-away. Entrants can select one of 10 hot spring destinations they would like to visit, and they have to post a comment, preferably about their love for Ted, or maybe their favorite scene in the movie. They’ll be accepting entries until Feb 25, and entrants deemed to be the most “passionate” in their comments about the little bear that grew up will be selected as the winners.

Apparently, the prize only includes the stay at the onsen hotel and not the transportation, but a chance to soak and relax in a hot spring bath and get your very own Ted doll certainly sounds attractive to this writer. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, I hope you have the chance to do so because it’s bound to bring you some good laughs!

My girlfriend watched the English language version with subtitles and loved it. She has the DVD and we have watched it (well me not glued to but it is on in the background) at least 5 times in the last month or so.......

Kay,

it's an absolutely hilarious movie

Sorry. I gave up half way through.

I thought it was terrible.

Hilarious?

No.

probably not profound or enlightening in any way

You got that right!

So, uh... is the lifesize ted a guy in a ted suit? Cos that would be somewhat wierd and creepy to get into the onsen with.

Especially if the winner was a woman.

"the movie is the top box office hit in Japan"

Hee hee!

Have to agree with BertieWooster here. Seth MacFarlane is a friend from high school so, although I never liked The Family Guy, I thought I'd give Ted a chance and decided to watch it on a recent flight. Sorry but had to turn it off halfway through. Maybe I would have thought it was funny or amuzing back when I was in college but not now. Sorry Seth.

This has got to be the worst movie I have ever seen, I turned it off halfway through watching it on a plane.

The contest isn't open to those of us on our way to Japan for a spring-summer visit?!? Pity. Can't think of anything sadder than soaking in an onsen without a bedraggled stuffed toy representative of the mindlessness of today's so-called entertainment. What will I ever do to get over the stress of not being able to win the privilege?

If the bear is true to character it should probably fart in the bath and laugh maniacally.

I haven't even SEEN "Ted", but I can counter your claim with one word: "Ishtar". It is impossible to find a worse English-language movie in the known universe.

What's wrong with a mindless comedy now and then?

I agree though that it would be a wee bit creepy if a young woman won the prize and a guy in a teddy bear suit slips inton the onsen with her... not only that, but what would steaming acrylic fur smell like?

Like some others have already posted I thought this movie sucked. Unfortunately for me all last cruise on the GW there were lots of people watching it, and it played on the ship's movie channels with alarming regularity. I will admit to laughing in a couple of places, but for the most part this movie is forgettable. I think USNinJapan has it right. This movie would be funny if I was in college, or around that age, but I am an old(ish) man now. If you want a funny recent movie watch 21 Jump Street (and for funny TV watch Archer).

Mindless comedy is fine, but it has to be one thing: funny.

Those bear suits are hot enough without getting into an onsen with one. Heatstroke in less than 60 seconds. That could justifiably be ruled a suicide.

I think that is the problem. What size is "life size" for a fictional character that was never alive? We're assuming a guy in a bear suit, when it's just going to be a plushie the same size as the bear in the movie.

definitely hilarious)

Depends upon what your definition of hilarious is. If you think pulling wings off of flies is hilarious then I might agree. Parts of the movie are a bit vulgar and sophomoric particularly for younger audiences.

mindless comedies are great - this one just isn't done that well. There are a few parts that made me chuckle, but I didn't laugh like I wanted to.

One word: hilarious.

I watched this in English with Japanese subs and it was amazing!

Need to waste two hours of your life, give TED a try. It's legal.

You could see all the funny parts of this movie in its 30 second preview. I think Seth macfarlane is usually brilliantly funny, but this movie is unwatchable. "jackass" is the only movie I can think of that's worse.

Sorry, I loved it and laughed throughout. The thing about comedies is that everyone has their own sense of humor. For example, I liked Ted and The Hangover 1 & 2 while a lot of people thought they were garbage. I, on the other hand, think any movie starring Will Ferrell or Ricky Gervais is just plain unwatchable while people act like Anchorman is the greatest movie ever made.

Well judging by how well this movie has done at the box office there are evidently a lot more people around with bad taste and a base sense of humor than I'd thought.
