I don't like Japanese music too much, but all respect for Sazan. Sorry to hear they split and hopefully we'll see them back together in a few years. Best of luck to all of them!
Southern All Stars' last album debuted at #1 only three years ago. That's pretty damn current if you ask me. I think they're more relevent to the current music scene than you give them credit. Don't forget that the older generations may have trouble keeping up with new music and artists but the opposite isn't true. I'm willing to bet that a high percentage of the under-20 Japanese crowd not only know who SAS is but can sing their songs when they karaoke.
"If they are legends why is it I have never heard of them? Oh yes, I have some taste in music!"
That's an interesting statement. Ignorance equals taste. There's a valuable lesson to be learnt here.
Anyhow, they may break up, but good music never dies, so I'll be singing along to Tsunami with thebottomline in that big ol' karaoke box in the sky. What a song!

SAS are freaking awesome! As thebottomline said 'These guys should be global superstars'
If you want entertainment, check out their latest New Years Eve 2007 CD-DVD double set in the record shops now. It had me dancing in front of my computer screen :-)
Honestly, they are the best band I've ever come across anywhere.
Here's some info on Wikipedia about them:

BTW, SAS are still so hot they have members only ticket sale concerts, and still pack out massive stadiums.
Gotta admit though, without Kuwata-san, SAS wouldn't be flash.
I'm not gonna miss them much. Didn't mind their music years ago but now it all sounds the same.
On another note, some of you have said you've never heard of them! Echoing another post, what are you doing HERE?? In terms of popularity they're the Beatles of Japan - only they're career is more than twice as long! I heard them within a week of arriving in Japan.
They have had some duff moments, but songs like Itoshi no Eri and Tsunami are absolutely superb. My friend's husband (who was in the JSDF - looked mighty fine in his uniform on their wedding day in Glasgow 6 years ago) used to rock those two songs at karaoke.

In the same way Aerosmith and other dino-rockers are, USNin.

If they are taking a break in 2009, why announce it now? Seems just a little odd.

Betting, it gives them time to set up the 'farewell for a while' tour I woudl guess and sell all that extra merchandise.

As for SAS, definitely one of the best Japanese of the past 20 years. That doesn't make them great, but they are still a notch or three above most.
"Elly, my love, soooooooo sweeeeeeet" Still gives me goosebumps. And her name aint even Elly

I don't like their music, but I like the lead singer. He's been on a few TV shows in the past and he's got a good sense of humor.
