It's an American film about a popular American president and so makes the American cinemagoers feel good about themselves... plus it's a Speilberg film, so the thing is almost a dead cert for an Oscar.
Speilberg could make a movie about a mouse farting (using glove puppets) and still get an Oscar nomination.
Virtuoso
Speilberg wouldn't understand subtlety in filmmaking if it jumped up and bit him on the schnozz.

Lol thunderbird, true enough. I saw it and it wasn't all that great. Most of it is downright fictitious. But, the subject matter makes people feel good about themselves as you say

To me, Academy nominations or awards are essentially meaningless. Excellent films are often overlooked, and some crappy ones become winners.
It's entertainment, and so it's in the eye of the beholder.
Day-Lewis may have made an excellent performance, but the film is a dramatization of an historical period, not an historical documentary and according to several historians is factually inaccurate. But it is an enjoyable film as entertainment.

21 Jump street is far funnier....
