In short, Disney/Lucasfilm sent a near-final cut of the movie to MPAA to get the rating just recently.

The five other films in the series were rated PG, but the first three were released before PG-13 was created in 1984.

Didn't they chop some guy's arm off in the first one? And blow up an entire planet?
