"Fire chief" Takako Uehara

TOKYO —

Takako Uehara, 26, who is an actress and member of reunited singing group SPEED, on Monday attended a emergency fire drill in Tokyo in her role as honorary fire chief for a day.

Uehara, who recently appeared as a firefighter in a recent TV drama, made a public appeal for fire prevention. “I really respect what firefighters do,” she said.

Asked the obligatory question about whether she has a burning passion for someone, Uehara said, “I wish the bell of love would ring.”

“I really respect what firefighters do,”

Finally, a more educated response to the silly questions asked by the media. Unlike the airhead response by many other campaign girls in earlier JT articles.

Why do they always appear with a childish mascot as these events?

Because childish mascots are required here in Japan -- so that no matter how serious the subject matter, this nation of ageless Hello Kitty fans can understand it. Remember, kawaii rules, not real information.

Why do they always appear with a childish mascot as these events?

Because the culture encourages childish behavior/thinking. Amae.

I think childish mascots are essential, don't you? That way, if someone I loved was trapped in a burning building, I could at least look at a man in a foam rubber suit and say "kawaii" to take my mind off it.

Because We Japanese are the only people in the world to have stressful lives, you see. We are unique in that respect.

    Bunch of children.

Uehara said, “I wish the bell of love would ring.”

On the other hand, Takako makes my bell ring, and twitch a bit. Wonder if she'd like to have a look at it?

    Ring-a-ding-ding.

She respects firemen? Well, I have a lot of respect for the fire department for getting her on board as fire chief.

Burning passion? Surely hoses, climbing up ladders etc would be better?
