TOKYO —
Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) on Tuesday apologized to Aizu-wakamatsu City in Fukushima Prefecture for distorting the history of the city in a quiz program broadcast on Feb 16.
According to TBS, in the program, the answer to a question on why Japan’s feudal government abandoned Castle Tsurugajou in the city was because of bad sanitation issues for enteruria. Aizu-wakamatsu City objected to this answer and repeatedly requested TBS to broadcast a correction.
A TBS announcer apologized by saying, “We are very sorry for offending many people. We apologize from the bottom of our hearts.”

why would you feel the need to distort the history in the first place.

It seems to be excreta, but as you say, there seems to be little use of the word in English.

I'm reminded of Jack Nicholson in "A few good men"..."Aizu-wakamatsu, you can't handle the truth!"

you'll all have noticed the wording of the apology, of course: “We are very sorry for offending many people.", not "We were mistaken." So it seems they haven't issued a correction at all, not according to this article, at least.
