What was so interesting about The Sound of Music was that initially, critics really hated the movie (and I really mean it). But yet, after the movie made US$59,000,000 in 1965 (around US$437,700,000 in 2015 dollars or 52,594,907,400 yen based on current conversion rate as of 18 March 2015), critics had to completely rethink their assessment of the movie.

Still remember seeing it a a teenager, and being completely mesmerized. So much so, I went back to see it 5 times that same month.

I found it OK up to the wedding after that it no longer follows the actual events.

I have disturbing memories of being forced to watch this as an elementary school pupil. I was taught that Satan exists in religion class but I'm sure they showed us a musical to reinforce the message and convince us there are truly diabolical things at work in this world. It still gives me shivers when I think about it. Monstrous.

That last good movie ever made.

I lived on that mountain in Germany for 4 years... and it was like living in the movie scene..

Kekahuna.

Sure you give country right? Location and shooting was done in Salzburg/Austria and surroundings where they lived.

They also left via train to Italy after the Anschluss, Switzerland would have been a serious hike.

The musical and movie got a LOT wrong.

Once saw an interesting rendition of Edelweiss at the Big Day Out by a guy sans pants. Can't say what he was doing. Anyway, I always thought it was cool to hate it until I saw it again a few years ago. Great movie and music... but I won't tell my mates that.

I liked this scene:

Captain von Trapp: It's the dress. You'll have to put on another one before you meet the children.

Maria: But I don't have another one. When we entered the abbey our worldly clothes were given to the poor.

Captain von Trapp: What about this one?

Maria: The poor didn't want this one.

But I also really liked the fact that Angela "Penny Robinson" Cartwright played Brigitta.

@Itsme. The location's almost on the border. Perhaps they share the mountain... ?

'And they left on a train' is not very climactic, is it? And alleghorically, leaving your home and everything you've ever had or known, uncertain that you'll ever return, could be as difficult emotionally, as climbing a mountain.

It's a film, not university history.

Too many people do believe Hollywood invented Historical facts, goes even back to the 1920's.

Like the thumb down to sentencing a defeated gladiator to death and many more.

Actually the movie is based on the musical.

Yes, they left by train after the father turned down an offered military position but agree fleeing from persecution is more impressive or their real names or why they became a singing troupe (father went bankrupt when his London bank crashed).

I was 4 years old when the movie came out. The family went out to the theater, back when "going to the movies" meant a place with one huge screen, not 18 little ones. The curtains in front of the screen opened as the (very brief) opening credits played, and that great aerial shot and the music building up to the opening lines were pretty overwhelming to a little kid. Even now, that's a pretty stirring opening. I don't care how much of the story is made up, it's a great movie.
