Tokyo rolls out red carpet for 'Godzilla'

I think the movie was pretty good... and hopefully the Japanese audience will also enjoy it. The storyline is moving away from the classic movie, but sometimes every good movieline needs a re-boot...

I thought this movie might have been good: had Godzilla actually appeared in the first two thirds of it; and had the "leading" man appeared to have been interested in being in it instead of walking through in a bored coma like he did. Ken Watanabe and Bryan Cranston, of course, were good.

This one has to be the Best since the original! See it in 3-D & flip out on it!

I didn't like the movie much overall. Some good parts were ruined by the bad pacing.

have not seen the movie yet, but Time magazine in May 19 issue called it a cli fi movie, new term for climate fiction genre a la sci fi to cli fi, and Director Edwards always calls it a cli fi movie ie, Nature Bites Back. But is it really a cli fi movie? If yiu see it, dish here. curious

For better or for worse, Godzilla films are very formulaic in nature.

-Lots of bogus or "wtf" science

-Cheesy human subplot that dominates 1/2 the film

-Usually some current issue (environment, tsunami, bullying)

-Monster Reveal and iconic buildings get destroyed somewhere near the end. (Typically Tokyo, but also Hiroshima, etc)

While I'm all for limiting as much of the bad as possible, I think many fans would complain if it deviated too much from this. (see first American Godzilla movie)

First US Godzilla movie didn't just deviate from the formula, kaynide, it dumped all over it. Rather than a radiation mutated dinosaur awoken by an atomic blast, gifted with radioactive breath/fire/beam and feeds on power stations, they gave us a mutated iguana that dined on tuna, laid eggs (it was female) and could run really fast. It was dire. Awful. Codswallop.

I haven't seen the new one (never got around to it) but from what I've seen and read at least they got G himself almost right (just those silly feet).

@thunderbird: absolutely, it was a terrible movie..so bad that people call the monster "gino" (godzilla in name only). Shame is it would have been an alright b-movie if it was just named something else.

Anyway, Not sure why the thumbs down for my stating the obvious above... Did someone have a counterpoint to add the the discussion?

Gino....Or 'Zilla' as it was rebranded, was nuked by Gojira in one of the last films (the name escapes me), much to all Gojira fans pleasure around the world

I like the Godzilla movies. :)

When are they going to make Godzilla vs Alien?

Godzilla is king, the first of many reasons why I love Japan. Haven't seen the new one yet but the original will never be surpassed.

I was really hoping that Guillermo del Toro instead directed this. He grew up with and is a real fan of Godzilla and classic Japanese monster movies, and you could see it in his Pacific Rim movie. He would have been more faithful and respectful to the source material.

Genjuro, as much as I love del Toro - Pacific Rim was a big let down for me, especially being a Kaiju fan. It wasn't a terrible film - just a bit silly and shallow (and I tend to gravitate toward the more serious, dark giant monster films).

You seem to be insinuating that Edwards, the director of the new Godzilla film, is not a real fan of Godzilla or giant monster films...

Are aware that Edwards has proclaimed the original 1954 Godzilla to be one of his favorite films of all time? Or that his debut film was a movie called 'Monsters' that was about giant monsters? Also, he's only 10 years younger than del Toro... not really going to effect much since neither of them were alive to see the original in theatres (most people outside of Japan never saw the original cut of the film until 2004 anyway).

Still, I would love to see del Toro's take... but I trust Edward's taste just as much.
