TOKYO —

American star Tom Cruise will arrive in Japan on Dec 1 for a 27-hour visit to promote his new film, “Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol,” and to show his support for evacuees of the March 11 disaster.

Cruise, 49, had originally planned to start his 11-nation world promotional tour in Dubai, where much of the movie was filmed, but decided to kick off the campaign in Japan instead.

Cruise is immensely popular in Japan where he loves to interact with fans. In the past, he has gone on a bullet train and a chartered plane with fans to Osaka.

During his brief visit, Cruise says he has four missions, which he has chosen to accept (mirroring the famous line from the films and vintage TV series).

First of all, he will attend a news conference. Then he will meet fans invited from Fukushima, who have been displaced by the March 11 disaster. His third mission is to attend the Japan premiere and greet the audience from the stage. His fourth mission is being kept under wraps, but involves a surprise visit to an as-yet undisclosed location in Tokyo.

“Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol” opens in Japan on Dec 16.

his first mission should be to make better movies. he hasn't done anything worthwhile in a long time and MI4 is just to pay the mortgage.

    4 missions? But that's impossible.

one of his missions is to pack fudge, is it not?

Will his 4th mission be to support the farmers and fishermen of Fukushima by enjoying a feast prepared using produce from the affected areas?

Will his last mission involve the Tokyo Sky Tree?

Of course, like everyone else who comes to Japan, he's getting dragged to meet victims. Enough already!!

    tmarie,

I am sure he volunteered to meet the victims of the earthquake and tsunami. With e-meter in hand, the healing will surely begin.

He is only going to Fukushima as a marketing stunt. If he really wanted to meet them, he had plenty of time during the last 8 months.

Don't be fooled by marketing tactics. He is here to promote his film period.

Mr Cruise is not going to Fukushima.

OK - He is only meeting fans from Fukushima as a marketing stunt.

From what I have seen of Tom Cruise in Tokyo, he is one of the few movie stars who genuinely enjoys interacting with his fans in Japan. I remember seeing TV programs showing him on the bullet train posing with every fan for a photo during the trip to Osaka.

Most other stars couldn't care less about their fans. They are basically required to come over to Japan by their contracts. They walk the red carpet, shake hands, do dozens of 10-minute interviews one after another and then disappear into the night. If they are really unlucky, they have to appear on SMAP X SMAP.

    You're a good man Tom.

I think you hit the nail on the head CrazyJoe. I bet the family farm he will get the chance to climb the Sky Tree on the outside. Since he actually did that stunt himself and scaled the Burj Khalifa in Dubai (the world's tallest building), why not do the same on the world tallest broadcast tower that happens to be in Tokyo? That certainly would be a bigger marketing stunt than visiting the victims of Fukushima. (weather permitting of course)....haha

Tom Cruise seems to be half decent.

"Mr Cruise is not going to Fukushima"

Unless... that is the undisclosed, secret location. But I suspect it's elsewhere, and not in Tokyo.

Damn, I will miss it, why didn't he picked from the 25th to the 27th?!!

Tom Cruise is well liked wherever he goes. When he flimed parts of The Last Samurai in New Zealand, he was known for walking around, shopping at the supermarket and talking with fans and normal people in the street. He attended a local Maori performance and was very respectful and polite. He has an easy way about him I think.

Good on him for meeting his fans. Can't believe he is just a year older than me - wish I looked that good... hey, maybe I do :-)

    Tokyokawasaki,

What's the point in trying to point out possible hypocrisy in Tom Cruise's visit with the Fukushima victims? Does that supposed insight contribute anything other than show the world your own cynicism? Bottomline: Tom's meeting with victims and the victims who go to meet him will have their spirits cheered. Good for both of them.
