TV commercial of the week: Ippon Manzoku Bar and Tsuyoshi Kusanagi

TOKYO —

SMAP singer Tsuyoshi Kusanagi appears in a TV commercial for Ippon Manzoku Bar, which is a chocolate-flavored bar from Asahi Foods.

In the commercial, Kusanagi plays a teacher whose students are going to take university (or high school) entrance examinations.

The commercial encourages students to do well by eating the Ippon Manzoku Bar.

there are good commercials and crappy ones. the body language, the facial expression, is appropriate for a clown performing to entertain very young children. wow, what some super-rich people will do for some more money?

    Gulping, crunching, slurping...

Everywhere else, this is gross- but here, it sells products...

The video on Youtube is linked from the article. Kusanagi, thinner than ever, pretends to be a cram school teacher, writes on a blackboard, questions whether what he has written on the board is important or not, opens a chocolate bar, dances with his elbows out sideways, says "healthy" pronouncing the "th" and shouts "ba(r)" punning the ba of I'm back (dort da, "inai inai ba-") perhaps. Like many commercials in Japan its appeal rests on the extent to which a grown man can make a fool of, or parody himself, or a respected role of a man, and Kusanagi really can.

Encouraging anyone to do well via sales of a specific product is just extremely poor and desperate advertising, and getting Kusanagi to pimp it only makes it worse. Does he take off his clothes and run to a park and assault police in the CM?

    Ben: "Yes. Yes, he does."
