TV commercial of the week: Sukiya with TOKIO

TV commercial of the week: Sukiya with TOKIO

TOKYO —

Here is the latest commercial for “gyudon” beef-bowl restaurant chain Sukiya.

Sukiya is popular with salary men and students because of its cheap prices. A regular bowl costs only 280 yen.

Popular idol group TOKIO perform in the commercial. They sing: “There are hamburgers in the U.S., there is pizza in Italy, and there is gyudon in Japan.”

There are hamburgers in the U.S., there is pizza in Italy, and there is gyudon in Japan.

It bothers me that I cannot fathom the deeper irony of this commercial that causes less cynical creatures to wet themselves with laughter.
