TV series features model yelling at the camera, and nothing else

Japanese media seems to be run on the principle that adding attractive women to anything makes it better. Commercial for beer? Cast a high-profile actress. Serious news program? Let’s make a former bikini model the co-host. Posters encouraging people to fill out their census forms? We think they’ll be more effective if we use 75 percent of the space for a picture of a girl with a cute smile.

A new TV program seems set to carry this strategy to its illogical conclusion. Instead of enhancing the appeal of something men generally like or feel indifferent towards, broadcaster TV Tokyo’s idea is to create a miniseries that’s nothing but a good-looking girl chewing out the camera.

The program offers exactly what’s implied by its title, "I Want Risa Yoshiki to be Angry at Me." Yoshiki is a popular gurabia, one of Japan’s subset of models that specialize in seductive and suggestive photo shoots that stop short of full nudity. In the series, which airs early Friday mornings in August at 1:53 a.m., Yoshiki is dressed fairly conservatively for her line of work, but makes up for it with some extremely provocative language.

In the preview producers released to YouTube, from which these images are taken, we see Yoshiki in a variety of outfits and settings, but one thing remains the same.

Each episode lasts just five minutes, but we imagine they feel a lot longer given the amount of fury the model is shown spitting out. The four planned installments will have different themes, in which Yoshiki pulls no punches in showing her disdain for men who dis their subordinates at work by saying they’re part of a lazy generation, don’t listen and put words into others’ mouths, think they’re being cool when trying to pick up a girl at a hostess club, or can’t help leering at girls.

She seems to have a particularly nasty bone to pick with men past their mid 30s, which by Japanese media standards makes them pitifully over the hill. Among the remarks the 27-year-old Yoshiki lets fly:

"You’re way too damned old to be getting excited over manga! Hey, hey, hey! Hello? Is there something wrong with you? Just knock it the hell off already. Where the hell are you staring? You’re in your late 30s! Shouldn’t you start acting like an adult? Dumbass, listen when people are talking about pancakes!"

For many people five minutes of nonstop squirming will be all they get out of "I Want Risa Yoshiki to be Angry at Me." It seems pretty clear that the target audience, though, is happy for the simulated personal attention, as demonstrated by the clip’s closing line, where the exasperated model yells, “I love you guys, dammit!”

I don't need a TV or YouTube for this, my wife volunteers whenever she's in the mood.

I don't think she's up to the task of really portraying an angry woman. But many guys enjoy being abused, so it'll probably be popular.

Wow. Riveting quality tv.

I am SOOOO glad we decided to dump the TV when we moved to Okinawa!

Kind of like biting the hand that feeds you, no?

Since anger is generally less acceptable -- Japanese find it difficult even to recognise the angry face in Ekman's six "universal emotions -- it is only generally expressed towards intimate others. In other words, yes, by being angry with who ever is behind the camera the x-nude model is expressing the punch line, "I like you," in a much more compelling, beguiling way. If she just said "I like you" then it would appear totally phatic (社交辞令). I think Sensei258's wife likes him lots.

Isn't that like 90% of Japanese doramas nowadays?

Dumbass, listen when people are talking about pancakes!”

Am I missing something here? If my attention wavers when someone is talking pancakes I'm the dumbass? The only Dumbasses I can see are those who came up with this idea and even more so those who would actually watch it.

Glad I never watch Japanese TV as this sounds worse than all the rest of it.

Risa is brilliant in this. The video was hilarious, alluring and disconcerting at the same time — and almost exactly what my wife looks and sounds like when she rants.

I am sure this puts the fear of God into the minds of many Japanese viewers who are painfully reminded of their monstrous moms and/or wives who are saccharin-sweet to the outside world, but ferocious behind closed doors.

Hmmm. Shall we review domestic violence? This is okay? Acceptable? Try this at home!!!

Verbal abuse is also domestic violence and here we are encouraging women to do it.

Relax ladies, if things continue like this you'll never be arrested for it and 99% of family courts won't even listen to a man who complains that's the kind of treatment he received.

Yes, lets encourage this. Show the world it's okay to verbally abuse men at work and at home.

There's an interesting statistic that police departments in the U.S reported about the Jerry Springer show. They said that highest number of domestic violence calls came during and after the Jerry Springer show.

Lets see what happens with this.

Sanma is another one that loves to scream when talking. In fact u can see his veins on his neck almost about to burst when he speaks.

And the Superbowl.

The most coherent screamer is the high-pitched TV shopping guy. Speaks volumes.

I think this was inspired by a Japanese program called Geinokai Kire Onna Juku (芸能界キレ女塾, loosely translated as "academy for teaching celebrity women how to blow their top"). The episodes start with a panel of men teaching a celebrity woman how to express her anger, and at the end of the segments the celebrity tries out her new skills on an unsuspecting male TV station employee.

Here is one segment that featured Risa Yoshiki, which I assume predates the "I Want Risa Yoshiki to be Angry at Me" series featured in this article. Risa puts her new-found knowledge to the test in chewing out a TV staff member from the 17:00 mark of this video: <www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWtHqlbpdd8>

And the Superbowl.

There was a PSA in Britian during the World Cup that spoke out against domestic violence. It seems that there is a spike in the UK during big soccer matches. So I guess those soccer hooligans really get riled up for the games.

As with other fads in Japan from TV, I wonder how long before everyday people begin doing just this same thing for everyday conversations and dealings with people. I see some of it from time to time but I guess this will just bring it to the fore front.

Really do not care if this is stupid or not, which it is, she sure is cute.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

It is a program that will be screened at 0153 every Friday morning. It will last no longer than five minutes. I really cannot see why people have such a problem with it.

Where is the harm in a program that subverts gender stereotypes for a bit of humour?

nice verbal abuse porn, latest j-invention haha

She sucks at yelling or pretending to be mad, actually.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

does anyone really like to watch an angry J-bird shouting at them? Happens enough times surely.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

facepalm.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

The times I have seen anger openly expressed in Japan is towards someone below the person on the social totem pole. There is no lack of that in Japanese companies or from customers towards customer service workers. Historically the husband-wife relationship was not equal but also a pairing of the superior/inferior, so a woman getting angry might give some the feeling of "haha you're cute when you're mad" also recalling the image of a hen-pecked husband making an inferior's outburst into comedy to diffuse its power.

This lady doesn't seem genuinely angry at all, obviously a performance...maybe that is part of the reason it's funny?

"Dumbass, listen when people are talking about pancakes!"

At the 0:22 mark, she actually says something more to the tune of, "Dumbass, don't look at the waitress's panties when a person is (when I am? when she is?) talking to you about pancakes!" (てめー、人がパンケーキの話してる時に店員のパンツ見てんじゃねーよ!)

Scathing.

For men for a mother complex.

Sounds like a great concept for an interactive app - where you get to shout back and she reacts to your reaction etc etc.

This is said as though it wasn't the norm in practically every other country on Earth?

Regardless of what the primary intention of this program is, I would love to see something like this as a Japanese language learning course with transcripts and detailed glosses and descriptions of the pragmatic purpose of different complaints, as well as breakdowns for which language is masculine/feminine/slang/etc. There have been terrible slang books as far back as the 80s purportedly teaching all the dirty Japanese words, but I've yet to find anything that actually teaches the intermediate learner how to express anger in a way that gets them what they want. The pragmatics of expressing anger are different here and no matter how many new expressions I learn I still have trouble effectively using them.

@Katsu78 BAKA!!!!

You get someone saying this kind of stuff to your face while destroying the things you worked hard for and the result is "Someone is gonna get hurt".

This is the worst kind of programming. You want to see someone spewing venom? You want an education on this?

African-Americans call this kind of stuff "Ghetto". Anglo-Saxons (Caucasian) might refer to the same kind of material as "White Trash" or even "Redneck".

The only Japanese I want to learn here is how you would describe your uneducated, undisciplined, violent Japanese?

This program no matter what it:s length is is a step in the wrong direction. Especially if you consider "gender equality" in this nation is so backwards. Women and men should NOT be allowed to abuse each other. Japanese police choose not to get involved in such matters which leaves men and women defenseless when things become violent.

Yet for some reason Japanese women want to claim that men are violent. Then we get to laugh at this kind of programming?

@FPSRussia: Ver good points! Not to say that there is a sterotype of the docile Japanese woman, but to air this type of stuff on TV is on par with the "Jerry Springer" show in the USA. Fun to watch for those who have enough sense to seperate fact from fiction, but too many people can't do that and this will lead to some unintended consequences.

People like to talk about the effect of media (TV, music) on people. Take a look at some of the things that are picked up by mass culture based on what one sees or hears. In Japan, a place I have found to be not the most forthcoming in expressing emotions on a normal level, imagine what this show will do to those who can easily be swayed by the media.

All that ranting and raving ... and in the end she says she likes him! I guess that makes up for all the foul language she uses! She sure did not have me shaking in my boots . . .

1 ( +1 / -0 )

So what are Japanese men over 35 supposed to do according to women? Wear sleeveless pullovers, go play golf and be boring from then on? Luckily people (incl. men over 35) are more diverse.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

It's amazing how she looks great even when she's scowling and snarling... yum. As for the concept... well, anyone who takes it seriously needs to learn to separate fact from fiction. It's clearly a daft idea thought up for those who are still awake around 2am. Would I watch it? Once or twice maybe, out of curiosity but the concept isn't strong enough to sustain it. There will be imitators on TV and on You Tube... and probably that comedienne who wears a school uniform and fake eyebrows will do a send up on a variety show.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Came here thinking it was a dumb concept, but everything she says is true so perhaps having a cute girl ridicule (even if it's just for pretend) your ridiculous behaviour will do some good.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I completely agree with her that middle aged men reading comics is pathetic. What's controversial about that?

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Ooh I was pleasantly surprised to see Risa Yoshiki during my lunch break! Is it weird that I have her autograph stuck to my monitor?

Anyway, it was a pretty strange but funny video! I've been slacking off abit because this job is the most boring job ever, but that helped me focus a bit.

Have a good evening all. (Or afternoon in my case)

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I will do before with this show what I would do when one begins to yell at me, turn around and walk the frig away.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Minus two recs from a couple of sad people who believe cheap manga to be some sort of art form. Ridiculous. It is chidish and stupid for adults to read comics. Risa chan, even if trying to be satirical, was spot on...

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Works for me.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. You can find weird anywhere you go, but nobody does weird like Japan.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

last time the NHK guy came around I said I dont watch Japanese TV its not interesting at all, get all my families TV from the internet overseas. Commercials like this just ad to my case. funny thing he hasnt been back since I told him that. Ill never pay for somthing I have no interest in watching

1 ( +1 / -0 )

God I'm glad I'm back in the land of HBO, Showtime, Netflix, etc.

I hope you enjoy watching them instead of complaining about a country you don't live in.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Is this supposed to be a great thing? Honestly, Ill always be amazed by Japanese media, so proud to show and sell crap to their audience. Keep going then. Another quality show!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

S&M!!!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I forget who it was the other day on a thread about 'variety shows' who declared Japanese TV is far better than any Western TV, but I sure hope they enjoy this drivel while I finish off the last season of The Wire and rewatch some of The Sopranos and Breaking Bad.

Pretty legs, lovely hands, please turn down the volume and enjoy.
