The real story is the air to surface torpedos specially made to be usuable in a port as shallow as Pearl. Despite them being specially made, the Japanese had to train like mad to be able to drop them properly.

PBS always has good program like NOVA, Nature of Things...... It is my second favorite (right below discovery channel).

Why not show Japanese superior technology, while ignoring the millions of deaths caused by this attack.
Japanese TV should show taha these attacks caused the suffering of normal Japanese in response to this aggression, whether it be by submarine or airplane.

Did Japan attack Pearl Harbor? Nahhhhh, they had to show a little insistant behavior to open up the trade routes, wasn't that it?

Nova is a pretty academic show. I like the way they take something like this out of a powerful context and just go through the science of it. Even something like MythBusters gets all loaded up on hyperbole and show.
I seem to recall that the small subs were not effective. Late in the war, they did develop kamikaze subs that were effective because, well... they had human guidance to target.
Hate to miss the show, but I wish I could watch.

On December 7, the USS Ward fired the first shot at Pearl Harbor. They sunk a midget sub, hittin' directly in the connin' tower.
If it interests ya, check on the story of the sub that landed that day on the island of Ni'ihau (Hawaii). A local Japanese-American traitor willin'ly helped the sub's pilot. I believe they tried takin' hostages. Bottom line... an American got ticked off with the both of 'em and killed the Japanese sailor for bein' such a rude guest upon our shores.
Few folks know about this one...

I think you meant the Japanese Zero fighter that crash landed on Ni'ihau and was aided by Japanese-American residents. In the end, the residents killed the pilot.
I knew of this one...I'm from Hawaii. Mahalo.
