English Teachers in Japan Expos

TOKYO —

The ETJ Expos are held in six cities around Japan between October and December each year. There are presentations and displays of materials for college teachers, high school teachers, elementary school teachers, kindergarten teachers. The aim is to provide top-class presentations and material displays for every kind of teacher.
Displays

The following ELT-related organizations and individuals had displays at last year’s Expos: Abax, Alma Publishing, Bridge Learning, Cactus Education, Compass Publishing, the Daily Yomiuri, Dean Morgan, EFL Press, ELT Books, Eric Kane, Greg Crawford, Hiraki Books, IFG Asia, Intercom Press, IPI, JALT, Language Teaching Professionals, Lexicalport, Lexxica, Macmillan, McGraw Hill, OPM, Oxford University Press,

Fees

The admission fee for ETJ members is 500 yen. You pay this on the day of the Expo. It is also 500 yen for JALT and TALE members at the Tohoku Expo. Everybody else pays 1,000 yen. Non-members can join ETJ free of charge on the day of an Expo and pay the lower admission fee.

Information and preregistration

When preregistering, ETJ members only need to fill in your names, email addresses and the name of the Expo you plan to attend. If you do not preregister, you will need to provide more details such as your postal address on the day of the Expo.
Detailed information and a preregistration form is available here. It is OK to attend the Expos without preregistering, but it saves time on the day of the Expo both for yourself and for the volunteers taking care of registration.

Maps/presentation schedules can be found here.

The Tokyo expo has nearly 100 presentations an a large variety of topics. It is a great event that is not just "shopping for materials" which is a small part of the event.

Come find out for yourself and enjoy some time with people who are really passionate and knowledgeable about teaching, and operating schools.

The thing that appeals to me about this is that, if you are a teacher that makes the effort to actually go, then you are a tacher who actually gives a crap about what you do and those kinds of teachers I would like to meet!

Definitely reasonably priced and well worth a look if you are an English teacher. Unfortunately I don't understand why they do these expos in October, which is a busy time for most teachers and parents. With Undokais, Eiken test preparation and Halloween events, for many teachers there is no time to attend - especially if you live in the countryside.

It's a good event for ESL teachers here in Japan. I always appreciate good information that would make anyone better at what they do.

Now lets get down to what they really need - Make a UNION. All these Eikaiwa, JET, ESL and ALTs need to band together to demand the same rights as Japanese according to Japanese labor laws.

You want to make better teachers? Make them full human for one thing.

Here's a good presentation for the next ETJ meeting. "Confronting your boss about work conditions and employee rights to health insurance and retirement."

Stop calling what is a closet a teacher's room. How dare you tell students a closet is a teacher's room.

ETJ should use their influence to galvanize this minority workforce of native teachers into a strong effective union.

NeNinja ... you speaka da truth. Can't understand why anyone would thumbs down that. Definitely not Equal for those that are in the private work force trudging along compared to the cloud that is JET.

Holy Cow.l Has the English-peddling business and the participants it comprises come to this?! I don't even want to imagine what goes on at these gruesome things. Because I don't after many decades here see much improvement in the results year after year after year - excluding in the returnees, who often speak quite well as they must be going abroad at younger ages with family perhaps. And why are there so many stalwart eikawa no senseis on the verge of poverty these days?

Its my guess that the people who thumbs down netnnija are the people who are not professionally minded about the industry and relate English Teaching to the lower level schools only.

I get tired of attending these events. I'm always seated next to the mouthy teachers who can't get enough of laughing at stupid one-liners and stuff I'd rather not hear. Just pay attention to the presenter.

**I think that even they doesn't have any work experience than also they should know how teach students........ Its not necessary that all good teachers should have work experience............*

My previous employer suggested/requested that I go to one of these so-called "Expos" and "learn" how to be a better teacher. He (my employer) gave me the same spiel.... "The aim is to provide top-class presentations and material displays for every kind of teacher." Jeez!!! What a waste of time! Sure, if you want to be a salesman for their materials and make 15%-30& more money by selling their regurgitated crap-just what my employer was doing! SCUM!!!

Non-members can join ETJ free of charge on the day of an Expo and pay the lower admission fee. If your going to do this, give them a fake email address otherwise you WILL be spammed from every company at the "Expo" and then some!

I certainly cannot recommend ETJ and their cohorts, but if your in a system similar to theirs then you can get info on their publications.

    Just my 2cents.
