Slam Facts

Poetry Slam is one of the most entertaining events globally. It has achieved tremendous success due to these key factors: It is a fun event, it’s very practical, staging is extremely portable with its results engaging and benefiting communities locally, nationally and internationally. It is a diverse form of artistic expression, best described as a fusion of Idol, Comedy, Eurovision, Hip-Hop and Beat-Box -- in a nutshell, "poetry on steroids." It is a collage of original works delivered in time slots of 3 minutes maximum by each poet, judged by a random selection of judges from the audience.

Tokyo Summer Poetry Slam 2014 will be a great night of poetry, showcasing 20 to 25 poets with original works along with an exciting new Blues and Roots group known as The Swamp Root Jimmies, mixed together with the audience, the judges, the host and co-host all creating a fusion of noisy energy and excitement, resulting in a true collective form of freestyle entertainment honoring the ethos of Poetry Slam.

Poetry Slam was started in the city of the city of Chicago by Marc Smith in 1984. It has since grown into national and international events hosted by several countries, with such popularity that in Australia for example, the final of the annual National Poetry Slam competition is held at one of the world’s icons, the Sydney Opera House, in tribute to its popularity and artistic integrity.
