Once upon a time, otaku geeks were all grouped under the one banner, with the term generally being used to describe a person with poor social skills who chose to escape from the real world by staying at home and indulging in solitary past-times involving anime, manga and video games.
Nowadays, a lot of the negative social stigma attached to being a geek is slowly being chipped away, with self-proclaimed otaku proudly owning their obsessions and distinguishing themselves from others in the group with niche interests. Still, when it comes to finding a partner in the real world, it’s not all that easy for an otaku to be accepted for doing what he loves, so Japanese survey team iResearch decided to poll 200 women between the ages of 20 and 30 to find out which otaku obsessions women can most put up with.
According to the results, there are two types of otaku that stood out from the rest as having the best chances of finding a romantic partner who can put up with their interests:
Movie Otaku (62.5 percent)
Manga Otaku (58 percent)
Those who are obsessed with movies and manga to the point of being called a geek are in luck when it comes to the dating pool, with more than half of the respondents saying this is an obsession they can put up with. Given that these are two of the most mainstream hobbies around in Japan, chances are that women are likely to have at least a passing interest in these things too, which means that some kind of shared bond can grow from spending time with someone who enjoys these pursuits.
While movies and manga represent some of the most mainstream types of otaku hobbies, there are plenty more out there in the world of geekdom. Let’s take a look at how the remaining 12 on the list fare below.
Car Otaku (47 percent)
Anime Otaku (44 percent)
Computer/Internet Otaku (43 percent)
Gaming Otaku (40 percent)
Railway Otaku (35.5 percent)
Airplane Otaku (34.5 percent)
Bike Otaku (34 percent)
Plastic Models/Models Otaku (25.5 percent)
Idol Otaku (25 percent)
Military/Survival Games Otaku (21.5 percent)
Special Effects Films Otaku (18.5 percent)
Figurine Otaku (18 percent)
※ 10.5 percent of respondents said there would be nothing they could put up with.
According to the results, less than one in five women would be able to put up with someone obsessed with figurines and special effects films like Kamen Rider. Though it’s a low result compared to the rest of the list, it’s still promising to know that there are women out there who wouldn’t cross this off as an absolute deal-breaker when it comes to finding the man of their dreams.
With only ten percent of respondents saying they wouldn’t be able to put up with any type of otaku hobbies, it appears that being a geek doesn’t automatically mean that you can’t find love. As long as you can find a way to spark up a conversation with a potential female partner, there’s no reason why you can’t have romance and be an otaku king too.

It isn't because otaku doesn't necessarily mean stay at home geek, just means someone with an obsession for a particular subject, which can be anything, including outdoor sports.

I'm surprised that 25% of women are happy to forgive their partner's obsession with young girl "idols".

Some tolerant women in Japan. Pity in the case of relationships that choice has at least partly something to do with it.

Jeez, hard to please :p

I think the point of the story is that "Otaku" is a blanket term that means anything, but usually with a negative nuance in the eyes of the user. Notice "exercise otaku" is not in here? Why not? If one is obsessed with staying in good shape and spends most of their time doing it and reading up on it, are they not exactly the same as someone who does that with another target? Do what you like, peeps, so long as it does not hurt others. If people judge you for it, those people are not worth your time.
No one should dictate what makes you happy, so long as, again, it is not hurting others.

My wife said the worst chat-up line she'd ever heard was "Do you prefer Mac or Windows ?"

I'm finding it hard to forgive my wife being a 'Buy-loads-of-useless-crap Otaku'

If being otaku is not a flaw itself, being egotistical by prefering your hobby to your partner is. I believe it is the case for many.
I realized I should become a partner otaku !

My wife was something of a “money and status” otaku.
It’s taken over twenty years with me, but I think I can say she’s cured.
I like to think of myself as a therapist....

Windows? I prefer doors. Bye!

Yep, agree with that. When a hobby or an interest becomes an obsession in someone's life surely he/she can't expect others to 'put up with it' 24/7?
Who doesn't prefer to live with someone who is well-rounded, curious and vivacious and has a few/many interests rather than one 'obsession'? Not into obsessive/addictive personalities but each to their own I guess.

A quick look at some demographics graphs suggests there are approximately 9 million Japanese women aged 20 to 30. Of which some survey company so prestigous they put a lower-case 'i' as the first letter of their name polled 200. Let's not lose any sleep over whether or not the .002% of the population in this poll was correctly gathered to ensure no selection biases.

I have no idea what this article is talking about.

Otaku in Japan isn't simply an obsession. It goes a little crazier. We use the word otaku with the same weight as hobby. If you just have a hobby in Japan, it's normal. If you have a crazy obsession, it tends to creep 'normal' people out.
