Bicycle navigation system with calorie display

Bicycle navigation system with calorie display

Sony’s new portable navigation systems for bicycles shows the best cycling route and also displays calories burned. Sony said it is releasing this product in response to increasing consumer demand for bike navigation.

The NV-U35 is the most recent addition to the “nav-u” series. The bicycle navigation shows narrow streets that cars tend not to use, and offers information on bike parking lots as well as cycling paths. It also displays the speed and distance covered, as well as burned calories for consumers who use the bicycle as a part of their exercise routine. The product is also weatherproof in the event of unexpected rain or snow. The 3.5-inch screen GPS can be used up to 11 hours non-stop. Three colors are available including black.

The price of this portable GPS is expected to be approximately 37,000 yen. A separate fixture for placing the GPS on the handlebar is also available for 5,000 yen.

Snazzy hardware, but what about the software? Bike parking lots and cycling paths... more useful and realistic information is needed.

Good ol' Sony! Who else could come up with a bicycle navigation system, and NO mount for placing it on the bicycle - you have to pay ¥5,000 extra for it! And they still claim to consider the customer? No wonder they are doing so badly....

wanderlust, I also hate it but Sony is not alone on that path. Take the air companies - you pay 300000 yen ticket and on top of that if you want something more than water or tea you have to pay it overpriced on-board :(

Otherwise it would be great if they are offering bilingual GPS systems - any information on that?

you're not burning calories if, like the average rider in japan, you're going less than 2kph

I love this idea! I wanna check it out even though I already have a great GPS device. (Garmin edge 7000). Actually, at 37,000 it's pretty reasonable. The Garmin is fantastic though. 15 Hours (yes, I've tested it several times on the road) of battery, and you can program it for all the stuff that is listed for this one.

The software is installed of course, but the map data almost always comes separate and there are very few English Maps for Japan. Quite expensive, really.

This is a great product for all of the over weight people in Japan and in other countries.

stirfry, do you even live in Japan? Cycling is becoming increasingly popular, not only as a sport or hobby but as a way of commuting in Tokyo. Those guys usually go 20km to 30km per hour.

Much cheaper than the car ones. I am going to tape it on my steering wheel.

Garmin does produce an English version of it Nav-u software on an SD card for 19,800 Yen. It is expensive but I recently bought a system for a work car and have to say it's just as good as the Japanese software. Some curious coworkers also popped the SD card into a US-made Garmin Navi and it worked just fine (except for the telephone number search function).

37,000 is a good price but I agree, the mount should be included (Garmin includes one with their bike units).

This is great, I would definately buy something this useful then a not so useful ipad. I bicycle through central tokyo everyday as an average commuter 20-30km a day (roundtrip) on a mamachari no less.

Great. Something else to distract the obasan who invite death on themselves every time they venture out on their mamachari. People who purchase this product should have to sign a disclaimer, through which they accept all responsibility when they fly out from side streets into the path of unsuspecting drivers and end up splatted on the pavement, wearing the umbrella that was precariously balanced on their handle bars next to this ridiculous Sony product.

Great another thing the obasan can do while riding their bike in a typhoon.... now we are up to.. holding an umbrella, talking on the phone, drinking a coke, smoking a cigarette and now watching TV.

I only cycle in my area for my health so know were I am going & how to get back. THOUGH I can see in the future I will have to purchase a sensible GBS to be used when riding my motorcycle to also when driving my SUV, BUT only when pulled to the curb side of the road, for safety to check where next to go.

Waste of time and money - Get a smart phone! iphone has plenty of cool apps that do all that and much much more - heart rate monitor etc etc. The google android phones also have great apps like cardio trainer and mytracks. Already obsolete - nice one Sony.
