3,300mg represents about 9 gm salt. In Britain the maximum recommended salt level is less, 6gm, around 2.5 gm sodium. I believe around 12 gm is common in Japan. That represents 5 gm sodium. Then consider that most Japanese also consume a lot of sodium in the form of monosodium glutamate.

Japanese diet is very high of salt thanks to such a staple food as miso for example. I asked a Japanese nutirtionist what is so good about Japanese food as it is high of salt and sugar and she said that Japanese food is healthy because it is low fat.

Fast food they mention is a slow killer in the US. Anyway... Each culture has its own vice. Smoking here... and there are still lines out the door to burger/fries joints here as well. Obama's first meal on AF1 was a well waited burger and fries and they said he poured salt all over it...

How does one reconcile pre-refrigeration, salt cured meats and health?

Yeah, and most people in the world eat ( and drink ) too much salt.

But I have some good news - Kagome has finally brought out no salt added tomato juice - delicious!

Yay! Despite being over weight, I'm in the 10% that does get ENOUGH sodium.

90% of Americans eat too much salt: study

In other news, 99 percent of all food products sold in America short of raw fruits and vegetables contain too much salt.

Legislation should be passed to ensure all food makers and vendors serve lower salt content as default. Customers who want more salt can request it or add it themselves.

For example, you can go to McDonalds and request no salt on your fries, but why should anyone have to step up and request the healthier option? (I said healthier. Not implying those fries are healthful). Let those who don't care about their health make the requests.

you can go to McDonalds and request no salt on your fries, but why should anyone have to step up and request the healthier option?

Because that's the only way you'll get semi-fresh fries at McBunolds. Otherwise, you'll have to be content with the artery cloggers that have been sitting in the open heat racks for who knows how long.

reduce eating meat. The body only needs about a deck of cards worth a week, so it can be reduced significantly. Make the salad the main dish. Eat more fish.

Other countries do it just fine. It isn't differential calculus

oh and reduce drinking milk as well.

    gaijintraveller

sf2k, wasn't there a report a few years ago about McD's salads being less healthy than burgers because they contained so much salt?

The only way to have a low salt diet is to cook your own food. Actually, that is the only way you will have any idea what goes in it.

Tasty garbage. *takes another bite from my big mac

People keep worrying about whether they're eating 1500mg or 2000mg of sodium per day, whether their dinner has 300 or 400 calories, or if the food has polyunsaturated fat. What really matters is not what you eat, but you getting your big behind out of the office chair and running around every once in a while. Not even kids bother to go outside anymore, they'd rather chat with their friends on Facebook, so no wonder everyone's got health issues.

I love to cook, and I leave the salt up to the people I am cooking for. One can get used to minimal salt, but it does take practice. I think sugar is a bigger problem with fat Americans.

True words. Cooking for yourself using fresh ingredients is the best option. It makes you happier in life, if you cook your food by yourself. Works only if you have enough time. But otherwise applicable in every country of the world.

I agree JapanGal but just adding salt is not always good. For example if the meal is totally un-salty for me I tend to add more salt then if it was made with certain amount of salt in the process of cooking. I know it is difficult thing to do but I prefer low salt dish the right way from the cooking stove !
