Denny’s Japan to serve ‘the most delicious food in the world’

From May 27 you will apparently be able to eat "the most delicious food in the world" at family restaurant chain Denny’s. Are they just blowing their own horn here? Well, not exactly.

When they say it’s the "world’s most delicious food," they’re talking about the type of food rather than their own particular version of it, although I’m sure they’re hoping that some people will feel this way about it. The dish in question was chosen for the number one spot on CNN Travel’s list of the world’s 50 most delicious foods, and that dish is massaman curry. Originally from southern Thailand, it is now enjoyed around the world thanks to the proliferation of Asian restaurants, and handy packet sauces in the supermarkets that make you feel like a chef without the effort.

Denny’s will be offering a curry that promises to match the authentic Thai flavoring by mixing local spices such as tamarind, with its unique fragrance and sourness, into a sauce right there in Thailand, then importing this to Japan. Adding coconut milk and peanuts will add a sweetness to the spicy sauce, and create a rich, full flavor. Gently cooked chicken, peppers, and aubergine add a splash of color, and a sprinkle of roasted peanuts makes a deliciously crunchy topping that complements the smooth texture of the curry. Mmm…if what they produce is even half as good as the description makes it sound, then I’ll definitely be going back for more!

The curry’s debut will coincide with Denny’s ethnic themed food fair, where they will also be serving the following popular Southeast Asian dishes.

Spicy mains and a dessert that sounds like a pina colada will be just the thing for hot, sunny days this summer.

It IS the most delicious food in the world...that is initially prepared in a factory location, then re-heated in the Denny's kitchen before they put it on a plate and serve it to you. I'm not trying to be funny here, that's how the chain restaurants work in Japan.

Will be a disaster if served with Japanese rice.

But....but it's the best rice in the world, didn't everyone tell you??

I find it hard to believe anything sold in a family restaurant will be even remotely like the best food in the world.

Wouldn't this be a good time to have Brazilian cuisine? There is that little known event coming up.

The most delicious curry in the world? Excuse me?? Apparently, these people at Denny's have never been to India before. I like Japanese curry for what it is, but I know plenty of places where the restaurants in Japan make their own curry and the taste is amazing. I would rather go to those places than to Denny's (which is an insult to the traditional Denny's) where the food is as @sensei258 stated, heated up in some bag. The same goes for pancakes where most restaurants just heat them up instead of making them from scratch. I'll pass.

Previous posters mention the rice, and this is an excellent point, which I endorse.

I never knew tamarind was a spice. I always thought it was a fruit.

I don't remember ever having aubergine it it in Thailand or peppers assuming they mean sweet peppers.

Japanese will disapprove as they know Japanese food is the most delicious in the world and Japanese curry with Japanese rice is the best curry in the world for Japanese. At least this is what I am always being told. Others know better.

It certainly won't be the most delicious in the world after Denny's have got their hands on it. Maybe later they will come out with an "authentic masaman pork curry" even though it is a Muslim dish.

Instead of going to Denny's, try the Thai Festival in Yoyogi Koen today and tomorrow.

I'll give it a try. Any attempt to diversify from "hamburg teishoku," etc. is appreciated.

"Try the Thai Festival in Yoyogi Koen today and tomorrow."

I gave up on that a few years ago: they never have near enough seats, and sitting on dirty concrete that resembles the main concourse at Shinjuku Station while eating out of styrofoam boxes doesn't do it for me. I'd rather dine at Denny's.

If I go and try it and it isn't the most delicious food I've ever eaten will the give me a refund? Because I'm having trouble believing that the food in Denny's will hold a candle to what I ate in Le Meurice in Paris.

I will put them to the test...but the curry rice is a good start!!!

Denny's here is horrible. I recall the first time I went and the sadness and anger over the menu here. My husband convinced me to give it another try a few weeks and nope. I wasn't wrong 15 years ago when I first went. I hate how Japanese companies buy an American brand name/chain and make it nothing like the original.

@ tmarie - I share your pain. The first time I went to Denny's here I was expecting to have a "Lumberjack Slam", but they don't even do breakfast. That, and I had to pay more than $2 for a spoonful of canned corn.

They just bought the name, that's it. Just a shell. Everything else is completely Japanese. But yes, I too, am very baffled as to why they change everything and I mean, everything.

Wipeout,

I agree eggplant is a Thai ingredient. However, it is not an ingredient of Masaman although it is often used in green curry which is what the picture you saw at the tourismthailand site. Check on Wikipedia or my preferred Thai recipe site, shesimmers.com.

Masaman contains potatoes.

So no Denny burger?

I'm wondering if the taste of curry is as bad as the smell?

I believe 7 & I corporation bought Denny's up many years ago. While they left the US group untouched, they modified the ones here to suit the natives. They had a burger once but dropped that. It was mediocre at most. The company kept the Denny's logo only. Most family restaurants here are very clean and the service is polite with no tipping which is nice. But that's about it. Maybe when the Olympics comes around, they may include something from their US chain.

what is "delicious food"? it depends on who is eating.just a stunt perhaps!

Fine, but then why go through all that to buy a U.S. company chain restaurant only the completely change the menu? I really don't understand that. Then why not just use the chain restaurants they already have or make up new names. By the way, I seriously doubt that even when the Olympics comes around that Denny's will try to include anything from the U.S. stores. If they are not doing it by now, there is little chance they will do it in the future.

For the brand.

Denny's in Japan is way better than in other countries, but it's overpriced.

I'd kill for a breakfast 24 hours a day family chain. Is it too much to ask to be able to get pancakes, eggs bennedict, fruit salad and the like without going to some snotty cafe? I want a Smitty's here! http://smittys.ca/
