Get more curry for your yen at CoCo Ichibanya
TOKYO —
Any Japanese curry fans out there? If you’ve tried it, you know it’s in a whole separate class from the Thai and Indian curries most Westerners are used to. The sauce is dark brown and generally thicker and sweeter than other Asian curries, though the taste varies from shop to shop, and is served with rice. Along with some onions, carrots and potatoes, you can usually find some nice chunks of pork or beef in your basic curry, and then you can choose from a variety of toppings to make it your own.
For curry connoisseurs there’s nothing sadder than when you are enjoying your plate of curry rice and suddenly realize that you’re running out of curry faster than rice. You’re left rationing the last of your curry or finishing your meal with a couple of bites of disappointingly plain rice. Most people don’t know this, but if you are eating at the popular chain CoCo Ichibanya – affectionately known as CoCo Ichi–you can order more curry for free.
I eat at CoCo Ichi 2 or 3 times a month and have for ages, but I had no idea that you could get more curry if you wanted. Recently, though, I went with a friend who shocked my socks off by calmly ordering “A little more curry, please,” when his sauce dwindled. More amazingly, the staff brought it for him wihtout blinking an eye.
I thought for sure he would have to pay for it, but it was free. What a fantastic service. And if you are in a hurry, you can even ask for the extra sauce when placing your order. Just tell them you want a larger serving of curry and you’ll get it on the house.
So, if you haven’t made plans for lunch yet, take your empty belly over to CoCo Ichi and get your curry on.

Ah, dear old Coco - I no longer love you, that's for sure, but how I loved you...
Many's the late night I would stop off at the local Coco and sit swaying slightly in my seat, eyes drooping, as I waited for my kakifurai with uzura tamago as extra topping, L-size to go...
The eating so short, the cleaning up of the plastic detritus strewn across my bedroom floor in the morning, so long...
Those were the days, my friends...

CoCoIchi was my first meal when I returned to Japan. It blew my socks off and I yelled out "oishi!" (No reaction from the employees.)
I can't seem to ever get tired of their curry. I don't care about the naysayers saying that Indian, Thai, Nepalese curry is "better" and more "authentic". I love Japanese curry. I ♡ CoCoIchibanya.

I love Coco's level 10 curry. Can't normally find that spicy of food here in Japan. Didn't know about the curry refills though. Will definitely have to ask for some next time!

I love Coco curry and have been eating for more than ten years. Its something you'll never find at Indian curry shops. The only bad point with Coco curry is that it consists too much animal fat compared to Indian curry which is cooked in vegetable oil! Whenever I have a running nose or flu (cold) I eat one big plate of Coco curry and I feel lot better. Spices are medicine and curry makes your body warm!!! My favorite menu is fried chicken with boiled eggs and spinach.....oh makes me hungry...lol

Damn, I loved this place. It was the greatest!! They must miss me too! I don't think a month goes by without me wishing I could walk through the doors and order my number 8 spice. The blowback was horrendous, but WOW, what a treat it was going down. I still eat a lot of Japanese curry, but it's been a while since I've had the Coco. I wish they could launch that chain here in Toronto. It would take off like nothing else.
