Oh, well that's alright then. Give the man a payrise, he's obviously doing his job well. Instead of worrying about the abduction issue maybe NK should send Japan a big tub of Kimchee.

Oh I get it. Instead of waiting for North Korea to abduct the kimchee, the Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister should just send it.

Japanese food has quality, Chinese food has quantity.

“A large number of Hong Kong people have given very high ratings to Japanese cuisine, so this is the basis of the bilateral relationship between Japan and Hong Kong,”

Dey wil like us becoz dey like out fud.

Yeah, right. Bland food will make the Chinese forget about the islands. Some people are so optimistic it's sad.

Scores of people protested Thursday at the Japanese consulate in Hong Kong, demanding Japan release the detainees and give up its claim to the strategic archipelago, which is also claimed by Taiwan.

Why didn't the embassy staff give them some hiyayakko. That would have sorted everything out instantly.

Obviously not the full shilling. But a grain of truth in what he says. Most people i know in HK LOVE Japan.

as if the people of HK could really care about the Diaoyu Islands

How arrogant of them to believe that their food is so good that it can prevent wars.

Soft power, indeed.

Who said that? Anyway the Japanese pavillion at the Food Expo was planned a looong time before the latest activist boat excursion.

Don't confuse Hong Kong with mainland China. Hong Kongers themselves prefer to make the distinction by calling themselves "Hong Kong Chinese." The attitudes are generally far more sophisticated.

This report has only one quote from an elderly man who says the islands are China's, but how many others did they ask before they got to him. Most Hong Kong Chinese will likely be more concerned about not being able to vote in their own Chief Executive and the erosion of their freedoms by the mainland. The islands will be lower on their list of concerns than for mainlanders.

Hong Kong is different from China.

“Regarding the Diaoyu Islands, we definitely have to acknowledge that it is Chinese territory,” said Wong Yuk-ching, 62, who is looking to open a Japanese restaurant.

So, you are happy to use the word 'Japanese' and to use Japanese food culture to make money. But in your mind you will back the Chinese right-wing outlook on territory around it's neighbours.

How arrogant of them to believe that their food is so good that it can prevent wars.

How arrogant of you not to believe that the ordinary loves of normal civilians (good food, good wine etc) is actually far more important than petty politicians and right-wingers on both sides sticking their chests out and rattling sabres. Good food comes way above wars in my book.

TigerTokyoDome, I agree the world needs idealists. You may be fooling yourself but at least you aren't trying to fool others. Leave that to the politicians

By which standard have you calculated that the quote is arrogant? Or is the term arrogant solely your opinion? These people believe (rightly) that life goes on and there are far more important things in life than politicans berating each other.

By message to JT and it's moderation team, how come a poster is allowed to use the expression 'arrogant' which is purely their opinion, and when another poster writes that it is also arrogant to use the term, you delete the response? Is arrogance a one-way street?

Moderator: You called a poster arrogant. That is impolite and against the rules of the discussion board. The poster you were replying to was not calling any other poster arrogant. You'll have to do better than that.

All he is doing is trying to keep relations cordial and promote food.

Well so many Japanese people also happen to love Chinese cuisine, but that doesn't ease the tension between Japan and China.

^ food doesn't do politics

Scores of people protested Thursday

Scores are 12 nationalist grandpas in HK. 12 in Tokyo. 12 in Seoul. 12 in Taipei. 12 in Beijing. And the rest of their countries just find the island quarrels pathetic and would like to know what is on the menu for dinner. The issue is some grandpas are in governments.

...everybody under age 50 have no beef with each other--it's just a bunch of old blood people we're ALL WAITING for to die. It's their last hurrah. Father Time is undefeated, as well as GOOD FOOD. The fact about authentic Japanese food is true, globally...nobody messes when it's time to eat. The angry people are HUNGRY people, like the ones in Mainland China, North Koreans and so forth. I REALLY WISH more of the old-skool people would just collapse, en masse. The mentality of this political country-club shite is pretty much ignored in daily life, anyways. Only American, British and Australian expats ALWAYS make it about THEMSELVES and have no clue about what really goes on. And real feelings. YES, they have no clue.
