Popular Japanese fast food chain Mos Burger has opened a new restaurant that serves gourmet meals, alcohol and a special vegetarian burger made from a whole tomato.

Called MOS Classic, the new restaurant is a short walk from Sendagaya Station in Tokyo, which is just one stop away from Yoyogi Station.

Mos Burger is one of Japan’s most popular home-grown hamburger chains, famous around the country for sourcing the freshest produce from local farmers as well as creating a variety of healthy, low-calorie rice-burgers for customers.

Now the fast food chain is going upmarket, with a special restaurant based around the open-kitchen concept, featuring an alcohol menu, relaxing jazz music and a special tomato burger that’s so amazing you’ll want to recreate it at home.

Once you walk into the restaurant, you can see it’s very different from your regular MOS Burger joint, with a cosy bar area, comfortable chairs and chefs working on the open grill.

The lunch menu, served from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, features hamburger sets that come with a drink or dessert.

We ordered two of their recommended items: the Chilli Burger set (1,200 yen) and the Avocado Burger set (1,250 yen), which come with a drink and the smallest serving of fries we’ve ever seen.

The Chilli Burger contains a succulent, grilled beef patty, lathered in a spicy Mexican chilli sauce and sandwiched in between two grilled buns with lettuce, tomato and a tangy mayonnaise.

The Avocado Burger is a healthier option, with a lean beef patty and the fresh flavours of avocado, tomato and lettuce, complete with the tangy mayonnaise sauce.

If you stop by for dinner from 5 p.m., you’ll be able to order some additional a la carte options, including MOS Chicken Escabeche, Sausages and Sauerkraut and their stunning Tomato Salad Burger (more on that last one in a moment).

Beverages include beer, cocktails, whiskey and a variety of wines. They also offer siphon coffee, which doubles as a beautiful counter display.

For dinner (yes, we went back!), we ordered the highly recommended Teriyaki Chicken with Creamy Champignon Sauce (880 yen) and the Tomato Salad Burger (880 yen), along with a glass of wine and a Heartland beer brewed by Kirin Brewery Company.

We’re worlds away from MOS Burger’s usual fast food joint when the Teriyaki Chicken with Creamy Champignon Sauce comes served in a cast iron pan.

The star of the dish is a juicy piece of grilled chicken, coated in a delicious, sticky teriyaki glaze and covered with a creamy sauce filled with champignons.

Finally, we get to the Tomato Salad Burger, which is, in a word, amazing. In fact, we would go as far as to say it’s the best vegetarian “burger” available in all of Tokyo. With all the fresh flavours of a good bruschetta, minus the bread component, it’s like a tomato salad re-imagined as a burger. What makes it even more exciting is the fact that it’s something we might be able to recreate at home.

The firm tomato is simply sliced and layered with mozzarella and basil on the top and bottom and sandwiched together upon lettuce in the middle.

The delicious vinaigrette dressing, which includes whole coriander seeds, will be a little harder to recreate at home. It brings all the flavours together beautifully, providing a tangy finish to the fresh meal.

MOS Classic in Sendagaya is the only restaurant of its kind in all of Japan and the only place you’ll be able to try the unique Tomato Salad Burger. If you’re ever in the area, be sure to stop by and pay them a visit.

Sounds good. I liked Mos a lot when I still ate meat, and would go back if more branches have the tomato burger.

RofL @my 1st visit to MOS Burger its a joke of an establishment. Who wants a low-calorie burger? Pffft- featuring rice? Cut off the middle man & just go to Sukiya.

Hurry up and bring on Carl's Jr. menu: Double Western Cheeseburgers, Chili Burgers, The $6 Burgers, 1/3 Tex-Mex Bacon Thickburgers, The Big Carl . . .

I'll admit. Americans don't know rice as masterfully as the Japanese, but japan knows crap about "good burgers."

I'll always be a Burger King guy.
