Sailor Moon tortilla chips come in three flavors and a whopping 18 different bags

There are a number of upsides to "Sailor Moon Crystal," the recent reboot of the smash hit anime from the 1990s. Aside from benefitting from 20 years of advancement in animation technology and technique, the franchise’s proven record of success means that "Crystal" has a higher budget and sticks closer to creator Naoko Takeuchi’s manga than the previous adaptation did.

Still, a reboot is a reboot, and if you’ve already watched all 200 episodes of the original "Sailor Moon," "Sailor Moon R," "Sailor Moon S," "Sailor Moon Super S" and "Sailor Moon Sailor Stars," then you’ve got a pretty big head start on many of the places "Crystal’s" plot is going. So if you’re the kind of person who snacks when you get bored, maybe some Sailor Moon tortilla chips will help you pass the time.

As part of a tie-up with Japanese snack food maker Koikeya, from Nov 21 the series’ core cast, in their "Sailor Moon Crystal" forms, will be gracing bags of tortilla chips. All five of the Inner Sailor Senshi (Moon, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Venus) will make appearances, as will cape-wearing, rose-tossing ally Tuxedo Mask.

Tortilla chips are gradually catching on in Japan, but most homes still don’t keep a jar of salsa in the fridge. Japan is always ready to try its hand at unique snack flavors, though, so you’ll probably be fine without any sort of dip for the chips, which come in avocado cream cheese, bagna cauda, and balsamico grilled pork flavors.

You could debate which flavor each character would reach for during a snack attack (our money would be on pork for gluttonous Moon, bagna cauda for sophisticated Venus, and avocado for dressed-in-green Jupiter). It’s sort of a moot point though, since all six characters will be lending their likenesses to all three types of chips.

Sure, that might seem like a lot, but there’s a certain numeric elegance to the way there are 18 different bags of "Sailor Moon" chips and 18 collected volumes of "Sailor Moon"manga. Sounds like just the stockpile of munchies to assemble for spending a cold winter’s day at home rereading the classics.
