Was KFC’s great chicken give-away a success?

This past Fourth of July, while Kentucky Fried Chicken was celebrating Independence Day in the U.S., KFC Japan was busy commemorating the anniversary of the fried chicken chain’s entrance into the Japanese market.

On this day they held a one-day all-you-can-eat sale where customers could get 45 minutes of non-stop chicken for 1,200 yen. A very generous deal but how much did KFC stand to lose on such an offer, or did they lose? Let’s crunch the numbers and see.

According to quick estimates received by various reports, approximately 34,000 people bought the all-you-can-eat chicken from the 381 participating KFC’s across Japan. Among these people a total of 257,000 pieces of chicken were doled out.

Compared to the same day the previous year 1,050% more pieces of original recipe were moved amounting to a total sale of about 40,350,000 yen. This sounds great, but let’s take a look at the same amount with a regular price.

If you break the total amount given out into 3-piece sets of original recipe chicken, then you’ll have about 86,000 sets. At their regular price these sets would cost approx. 71,000,000 yen.

Comparing that to the sales they did on this 4 July, you can easily see that they lost about 30,000,000 yen in chicken sales. Although a considerable amount of money, KFC Japan is content to write it off as their way of saying “thank you.”

We can derive another fun fact from this data. With a time limit of 45 minutes to eat as much chicken as you can, the average person could eat 7.6 pieces of chicken at a rate of one piece about every 6 minutes. Who said math isn’t fun?

With all due respect, what is the purpose of this article - is it a straight KFC promo, to say how great the company is?

If I knew this was going on I would've been straight down to KFC. Damn this moving business which is taking a lot of my time!

1200 yen and only 45 minutes? Even if I'd known about it, I would have steered clear. How much of that 45 minutes would you have to spend waiting in line for more chicken?

I'd rather go to a baiking. No rush, and plenty of other options. KFC ain't that great anyhow.

Seems like SPAM to me.

Just ain't the same without the mashed potatoes, beans and macaroni!

You don't have to be a mathematician or a business person to "easily see" that the supposed 30,000,000 loss is nothing of the sort.

Didn't figure I could eat 1,200 yen worth of chicken in the allotted amount of time ... so didn't even try this one. I prefer to eat slowly and savor the taste ... if there is any there to begin with.

At their regular price these sets would cost approx. 71,000,000 yen.

At their regular price these sets would rake in approximately 71 million. The cost would be much lower.

All-you-can-stomach cholesterol for 1,200 yen.

Cheap at twice the price!

Everybody talked about this in the office. I thought that most locations would be too crowded and decided to pass. It would have been cool to go down there with a bottle of hot sauce (Tobasco or Crystal) and put down some Barn Yard Pimp.

Has anyone ever gone to KFC and left feeling like they didn't eat "all you can eat?"

I usually leave with a heavy stomach, fullness and remorse...

KFC really ticked me and my co-workers off. We planned on going for 3 weeks ahead of time. We got to KFC before 12:00pm to line up only to be told that this KFC was not participating. KFC didn't lose any money. It was advertising that was paid for. In addition, what about all the side items that were sold. And the friends that went along who didn't want the All-you-can-eat but instead ordered from the regular menu.

Too much deep fried chicken, you could only eat so much of that junk before Ibeing sick

I prefer to buy the chicken and cook it myself - which means I may eat at a leisurely pace. This also has the advantage of knowing what it's been cooked in...

How can something that costs 1,200 yen be called a "give-away". Anyway, IMHO KFC tastes better cold.

In Minoh, Osaka, there is one KFC that has all you can eat viking every weekend. I tried it once, and got my money worth.. but my children and my wife couldn`t eat their share.

Yes ...

Don't mind it myself, but Jeeves doesn't approve.

Oh well, back to the canard a l'orange and fois gras burgers!
