The ruling Liberal Democratic Party and its coalition Komeito Paty are locked in a debate over applying a reduced sales tax rate for fresh foods when the tax rate rises to 10% in April 2017. Komeito wants the reduced rate to apply to all food and nonalcoholic beverages, which would lead to a loss of ¥1.3 trillion in new tax revenues per year. The LDP wants to be more selective, applying the rate to vaguely-defined fresh foods. What's your view on the issue?
